Similarly you can be in the 3rd lane of a motorway but the 1st and 2nd lanes are a long exit onto another route, so the 3rd lane is actually your "left" lane. (And it is clearly so because of double dashed white lines to demarcate the two routes). I often see people move from 3rd to 2nd lanes, zooming up the 2nd lane and then cutting back into the 3rd (then perhaps 4th) lane in order to "overtake" traffic already on the route designated by the 3rd and 4th lanes.0
