But I think "The speed limit is 20mph" would be considered a good reason for going 20mph. Which is the reason I do 20mph.

It sure is. You said you very rarely drive at the speed limit so I put 2 and 2 together.
I still think you should be aiming for the speed limit - IF you're obsessively trying to stay at 58, that's attention taken away from the road. And of course, the situation should be different if you're alone, from when there's traffic around you. Best thing to do in traffic is 'keep up'.

I drive out of London quite alot on the M4 on a saturday night ive witnessed idiots touching 3 figures undertaking in the slow lane these are the people they need to get. Plus the cameras on the M4/M5 interchange are making more money than ever and where does it end up?...............Certainly not where it needs to be, speeding now is a cash cow end of. I know of someone who was caught doing 115 mph on a dual carriageway pulled over plod had him in back of car soon as they found out his job which was military police and the talk turned to plod antics etc they still stuck to their guns excuse the pun and issued him with a ticket ............a piece of paper with "Dont do it again" on it. However some old Doris doing 35 mph in her 18 year old Micra taking some other Doris for her hospital appointment gets lasered and costs them a £100 and a day back in the classroom or worse.

You do realise that a speed limit is the absolute maximum permitted depending on the driving conditions at the time, and that by driving at 20mph you're on the absolute maximum permitted, not allowing for a discrepency in your speedometer or other factors?

Or is your holier than thou attitude clouding your ability?

It shouldn't be possible for people to undertake you in the "slow lane".

You are obviously driving in the wrong lane, and causing congestion in the outer lanes.

I wish the Police would prosecute bad drivers, instead of just concentrating on people speeding.

He’s not said he was overtaken in the nearside lane.

So you drive without due care and attention? On the M25 there are numerous marked lanes for different destinations amd also you should follow the signs often displayed when limits are in place "Congestion, stay in lane"

On the M6 south past J7 I am following the designated 40mph in the left lane, being passed by cars doing an illegal 70mph, with no clear sign as to what the problem is... until you arrive at the junction and there is a stationary queue in the lane that merges in from the M5. At this point I pull out into the next lane to avoid stationary traffic jostling to exit - still with cars driving at 70mph through limit signs and at one point undertaken by Range Rover braking from 70mph to join join the stationary queue.

All these people are under the illusion that they are making a significant difference to their journey time and presumably that idiots like myself who are foolish enough to comply with the law are the problem. Then again, I'm not starting a thread "Any advice for a speeding ticket?"

    Why do you think that?

I agree. But that is not the situation that Muscle750 was describing.

Why do you think I have never driven in Coventry?

Just enjoying being contrary - but the point is that there are plenty of good reasons why you can be in the correct lane and still get undertaken at excessive speed.

An example I would give is that I see a lorry ahead and at about the 2 second rule I pull out at 70mph. You will then get "an expert driver" who decides it is necessary to teach you proper lane discipline (as they expect you not to pull out until on the backside of the lorry so you can maximise their space rather than your safety) who will swoop underneath you at 90mph and pull out again. All quite feasible.
