I thought deposits were getting capped at 6weeks rent?
No, Deposits can be any amount, but more than 2 months rent it becomes a premium tenancy, with an automatic right to assign it.
  • my sister is massively allergic to pet hair

We went to my aunts house for the weekend. Despite the house having been vacuumed to within an inch of its life and her popping anti histamines she still ended up sleeping in the car as it got too much for her

What about people in her position if they have to rent - the landlord will not be able to guarantee no prior pets.

Isn't that kind of her problem, nor mine, nor the landlords?

Not being harsh, but it's impossible to mitigate against everything, and we shouldn't try to.

You can't guarantee no prior pets wherever you live, even if a landlord claims they can. You can't even guarantee it in a hotel as service are allowed by law.

If the animal has gone, its fine once everywhere is deep cleaned as there isn't new allergen coming into the environment.
  • fortunately she owned so this hasn't come up but she wouldn't rent somewhere where the previous tenant had a pet in case the deep clean wasn't deep enough and she couldn't then get out of a contract

same kind of problem as 'why shouldn't i allowed to have peanuts on a plane even though someone else is allergic and could die - not my problem, I want peanuts'

But she lives in the real world, and there is a chance of encountering dog hair literally anywhere in the UK - as guide dogs are allowed to enter any areas.

    She must cope somehow surely.

There is a difference between passing through a shop which may have had a guide dog and living in a property where the allergen is constantly with you. She always has anti histamines on her and doesn't go to friends houses who have pets - they go to her.

her airways constrict and she struggles to breath (think massive asthma attack) so it isn't just a case of the sniffles.

No, that's actually totally different. For two reasons:

1: the flight operator can set their own rules
2: it quickly becomes your problem when the plane has to divert due to medical emergency.

My point was more about it being her problem to deal with, as it's her allergy. And as my previous comment - guide dogs are allowed everywhere in the UK, so how does she deal with that?

Fair enough, it was a genuine question. I'm not suggesting it's not a big deal, it is. Allergies pose a significant risk to health and need to be managed appropriately.
