IB question

IS is not taxable when paid on the grounds of incapacity.
IB is taxable after 196 days/28 weeks when someone goes onto IB short term higher (IBSTH) and then IB long term (IBLT).
IB claims prior to 13/4/95 and continuing, remain not taxable, as is Severe Disablemant Allowance (SDA)- which was abolished for new claims from 2001.0 -
Got the knockback today for IB becuase of lack of NI contributions, not sure what to do now, was sure I had enough contributions. Can i pay the shortfall and claim? How does this effect my IS claim?Have you got a job yet?

I believe it has to be recent contributions. Like the last 2 years.0 -

Based on previous posts you couldn't/didn't have bus/train fare to visit a relative. Where are you now going to get the money from?0 -

I am sure though that they have been paying NI contribs instead of IB.
So there is no way around this then?Have you got a job yet?

When you had ill health retirement from the bank didnt you claim Incapacity Benefit then? How long ago were you retired? How long have you claimed IB for? I am asking these questions as it will make the situation clearer.0 -

Weymuffred....guess that was too hard a question for you to answer. I'll try again. You couldn't afford to visit a sick relative & you needed a loan to buy a school uniform. Where is the money coming from to pay the shortfall (unless you think this is yet something else you can claim for....there's a thought for you & a topic for a new thread!) if you think the taxpayer will cough up yet again to add to your £30,000/pa0 -

No problems with the questions at all.
Yes I did claim IB when I retired which was 2001, in april 02 I went for medical and was deemed fit for work, I appealed but was 10 mins late and they ruled against me (thats cutting a long story short).
I think now for the last 3 years I have tried claiming IB, I get the same answer which is not enough NI contribs, but I know they have been paying them for me, as they stopped paying in May, you all know why so i wont dwell on that.Have you got a job yet?

Yes they would have been paying your NI conts through Incapacity Benefit but it would have been a credits only case and you would have been paid Income Support due to Incapacity. You need to have paid National Insurance through employment in the relevant tax years to receive IB, as you have only had credits you would not be entitled to IB so they are right. You say you have tried to claim IB for the last 3 years, what were you claiming between 2002 and 2004?0 -
On what grounds were you claiming IS before it was stopped? I am assuming it was because you were unfit for work. However as you have missed several medicals this year I am sure that will not be re-instated without your having a medical. If all else fails you can claim JSA and look for a job. You are still a comparatively young man surely you don't want to waste the rest of your life on welfare payments?0
