I buy the big bags of oats and use the cooker, but yesterday put a few in a bowel in the microwave, well lets just say they did not all remain in the bowel.
2 and a half minutes or too much water, not sure which was wrong.

That sounds rather serious. Have you seen a doctor? :rotfl::rotfl:

I think our ideas of what can and cannot be eaten for breakfast often limits our choices, this morning for example I had a squash salad for my breakfast.

If you want more traditional items there are many choices.
Porridge, if there is a second part to this, a few nuts/seeds or a small amount of fruit can be quite nice. I mash a banana with a fork, this means for two adults and two children one banana is enough to flavour the porridge without increasing sugar content too much.

Eggs are lovely, I sometimes have a vegetable omlette or scrambled as it is a little quicker to make.

Below are some typical breakfasts we have

    Plain porridge
    Porridge with 1tsp seeds each
    Porridge with 2tsp seeds each
Porridge with 1/4 mashed banana each
Porridge with chilli powder to taste or cinnamon
Omlette/scrambled egg with pepper, tomato, courgette and onion
Omlette/scrambled egg with mushrooms, tomato and onion
    Scrambled egg with chive

That's so cute! I would love one, but already have too many bowls.

I use a measuring cup: 100mls porridge oats, 200mls water (or milk) and microwave for 2 mins on high in a high-sided bowl (soup bowl style). Leave to stand for 1 minute then add flavourings of my choice. Makes just the right amount of perfect and cheap porridge.

OP what is your job? Do yoh need a carb-heavy start to your day...and what time do you eat your breakfast, bearing in mind you plan to eat again at your 10.30am break?

Regular oats & milk in a bowl overnight takes moments to heat in the microwave, if you need anything added then add fruit. As to the pancakes with syrup, knock off the syrup ;)

Also what sort of portion size are you dishing up?

  • if I'm on a sitting at me desk day, mug of tea, mebbe a biscuit.
if I'm on a yomping about day, mug of tea, 2 hard boiled eggs, chopped and chucked in a half tin of beans ( poss with some mushrooms if they are in the fridge)
    saving for more holidays
  • If you like porridge, you might like overnight oats. If you use non-dairy milk, some fruit and seeds it can be a healthy breakfast. Only takes 5 mins to make and it's ready when you wake up, so no faffing around in the morning. :)

  • It's all relative isnt it? Any breakfast is better than having nothing, I wish my teenage kids would have what you are having every morning! It also depends on what you are doing through the day, what else you eat etc.

However, to be a bit healthier I would swap the pancakes for something else (eggs are brilliant for breakfast) - or do away with them altogether and just have more porridge. I find those sachets of oats too small for me - I am very active and need a big breakfast! As others have said dried fruit is good in your porridge for a bit of sweetness or try frozen fruit.
