Thankyou Cherryscone was beginning to question my sanity in that I bought this meat in good faith had I known the quality no I wouldn't have that's why I asked the question.
Must say that I am shocked by the response all defending the butcher ???

Okay, i had let this go as you requested that we let the matter drop, however clearly you cant do that yourself, so :-

No one is "defending" the butcher. We're looking at it objectively.

You have said you didnt ask in advance if it was NI sourced, and also you didnt check the bag it arrived in which showed it was from Spain and you bought from a butcher selling meat at a bargain price rather than use a local reputable butcher.

So there has to be some ownership on you here for not doing your due diligence if the source of the meat was that important to you.

You then came on to a public forum thrashing about and suggesting that the butcher got all his meat from Spain and that it probably had been killed by a Matador. That is frankly libellous (and possibly a touch racist) and comments like that and threads like this can be quite ruinous to a business if they gain momentum online or on social media.

You bought cheap meat online and arent happy with the quality of it, but i dont see any particular beef (pun intended) that you might have with that other than if the butcher told you in writing in advance or advertised that all their meat was locally sourced. The butcher saying he is a local butcher does not equal him saying he only uses locally sourced meat.

Personally, i'd simply vote with my feet and go elsewhere. There are many many other quality local butchers here in NI, and it might be better to support them, than spurious online retailers if quality is the most important factor for you, would you not agree?

You seem to want to drag this on and on and on, and i really dont see what your expectation is of us, other than IF you have it in writing it was locally sourced beef from BEFORE you order it, then talk to trading standards if you're not getting satisfaction from the butcher, other than that, you're just muck raking.

Ultimately you bought cheap beef from a spurious online source, yet seemed to expect it to be of the highest quality?

Thats really not how it works when it comes to meat.

Since this is a country with a huge export based beef industry, who’s importing beef from Spain? And why’s it cheaper, given well publicized drops in the value of sterling against euro? Strange.

    good point,

is there a `beef mountain` in spain, is it being offloaded into the UK?
also transporting from spain to GB then on to N.Ireland can`t be cheap!?

Lots of meat is imported to here from the european mainland for various reasons, usually cost.

Quality may not be as high, but thats to be expected - as the O/P has found out.

The only one I know of is veal, which is not produced here. It’s mad - illegal to produce but sale permitted.

You can order direct from their website. They may well have retail outlets, but go through the website or facebook and effectively you're buying online and sight unseen.

Also do we not import a lot of chicken?

Do Tescos, for example, not import a lot of their poultry from Holland?
