    Purple pens make Purple Prose
  • Contact your child's school and ask them to sell them to you directly, should only need to cost 20p max, if it's only for corrections then one bic purple will last a year - as long as they keep the lid on in their pencil case. (Biros only leak in normal use when they get left without a lid on.)

Better still, buy a box and set up a micro business catering to the other frustrated parents!

  • It is pretty standard for schools to use purple pen for corrections, mostly in primary schools, referred to as 'the purple pen of power!'. I'm surprised thr school aren't providing them though, the primary schools I went in and saw them all did
  • If you buy a pack of multi coloured ball pens from Morrison's, Tesco, pound shop, etc, there is a purple pen in the pack. I use purple pens when writing out my Brownies planning.

Purple ones available on eBay, for about £2 for 5, or £7 for 50.

Just got 5, should last him rest of his schooldays, unless he sells 'em.

Can someone explain why purple pens would be better than red?
Sorry I may have skimmed the thread?
    Mind you, pick your battles.

    Purple pen of power?

sounds like the allegorical allure of alliteration.

It's the "Purple pen of progress". When the teacher marks the work, they have to set a target. The pupil then has to demonstrate that they have read and learned from the comment by adding an illustration using the purple pen (so that faceless bureaucrats can see it).
Very simplified example: the pupil writes an essay, the teacher writes (in red or green or sky blue pink according to school policy) "You need to make more use of adjectives to create atmosphere". The pupil then rewrites a sentence or two in purple, adding the relevant adjectives. All this happens in a space/time continuum which is not included in lesson time. The teacher must also check that the pupil has read their target and responded to it correctly. Even if it only takes 30 seconds to open each book at the correct page, check and record, that's an extra quarter of an hour for each class of 30, for each piece of work, on top of the time already taken to mark it the first time, which has to come from somewhere! NB if the teacher says "I like the way you've introduced that character", as the pupil is working, they are supposed to record "Verbal feedback given" on the piece of work.
    Cynical . . . Moi?
