I would be open to direct communication for a house trade. I dont use facebook but would be happy to talk via email.

I agree with this. I do use Facebook -I wouldn’t have them as friends but would be happy to use it as a form of communication.

I’d quite like to be able to talk to them, if necessary. While it isn’t the same my best friend bought my flat (this caused other issues) and it was nice to be able to let each other know the current state of play without having to go through solicitors/EAs.

You’d have to be careful, though, and not overdo it.

I do think Facebook friends is a step too far though unless it's purely messenger to keep a dialogue open such as in our circumstances.

    This^^^^.

Facebook messenger does not mean you become Facebook friends. It means you can communicate without exchanging mobile numbers or email addresses. It means you can make contact with someone without knowing any contact details.

What happened with picking up the phone and calling/texting?

    Nothing.

But as the OP specifically asked about Facebook...

FB Messenger does have the advantage of being able to be used at times when you would not want to phone/text.

And, as has been said, I would not mind a Facebook message from someone I did not know - I would feel less inclined to hand out my phone number so quickly

Facebook messaging works without knowing the phone number.

Your link is irrelevant. No one is suggesting making friends, in real life or FB friends, with your buyer.
