I like the idea that it costs them (us) 34p for every request for driver details. Did I hear correctly that amounted to £700,000 over the year? Outrageous!

The figures quotes are years out of date, based on paper applications.

Most PPCs use electronic applications to the DVLA. No loss of money (perhaps, depending on what they include in their calculations) but £2.50 a pop seems ridiculously low.

PPCs should have to pay a tenner a go, IMHO, after all what's wrong with a deterrent sum? The Supreme Court in ParkingEye v Beavis were happy with the idea of charging more than it costs, in order to discourage certain behaviours, as long as there is a 'legitimate interest' supporting the charge.

Ergo, the DVLA should charge a tenner and use it to fund the complaints Department that no doubt is NOT factored into the costs of getting DVLA data (but it should be).

  • Thought it was an interesting watch. They seemed to grasp most of the key points.

I've never watched a parliamentary debate before, but is it common for the speaker to not actually give the potential 'nays' a chance to say 'nay' at the end. Do they just judge it from the feel of the debate?

Just a shame my MP wasn't there to show his support even though he'd assured me he would be!

I think the MP in question said the figure was from 2014. However in the debate last year the minister who responded for the government said the provision of data was cost neutral.

Yep but not taking into account the complaints. The DVLA certainly fail by not counting the man hours and other costs spent dealing with the aggrieved public.

Just having watched this from here in the deep south, I must say (name escapes me) but the SNP guy (who has never previously impressed me) was pushing many of the right buttons on this, to the extent that my prior indifference to his general Parliamentary input (having previously being quite poor), has suddenly changed to one of (reserved) admiration.

Surprised at the apparent cross-party support. All looks promisingly optimistic.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Yes, but not really surprised at the cross party support, after all 'parking charges' are indiscriminately meted out to all and sundry.

The names of the MPs are now given next to the link already provided and I am sure they would welcome more recognition :)

Anyone who has ever been ripped off by a company should add to the bad reviews on TrustPilot.

    For example, here's ParkingEye:

    https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.parkingeye.co.uk

Trading Standards should also be contacted by victims of companies who take money for no service.

And his was what I thought was the worst contribution. Wanting local councils to be the ones to monitor the operations of private car park operators at car parks in their area. What could possibly go wrong with that.

One of the points that stuck with me was made by the Torbay MP when he said that two private car parks in his constituency generated more complaints than 30+ car parks operated by the local council.

One thing which was missed was the comparative percentages of successful appeals by P0PLA and the IAS, and that IAS adjudicators were anonymous.

One notable point about this whole affair is the lack of comment from the parking companies. They seem to be unwilling to give their side of the story. Could this be because they cannot defend the indefensible?

We used to get Patrick (upskirt) Troy regularly appearing on TV trying to give the PPC's side of the story, but the BPA now seems to have gone shy on the whole matter. Mind you some of Troy's silly statement were always good for a laugh. Remember when he said that it was councils who had copied the black and yellow ticket envelop design from the PPCs, and not the other way around?
