Dear Forumers,
I would like to know if I am legal to drive a UK car in Europe without buying or upgrading current my car insurance.
The DVLA indicates that:
"All UK vehicle insurance provides the minimum third party cover to drive in other EU countries."
But my insurance policy says:
"Your Certificate of Motor Insurance includes international cover for a maximum of 90 days in a single period of cover on a third party basis only"
So which is correct? I am going to stay in Germany for about 6 months and I would like to bring my car with me.
Regards,
L

Both are correct but the insurance provider can impose a maximum period of cover per trip.
Either way surely you want more than 3rd party cover anyway, especially if its 6 months.0 -

Yes, I believe so, but only for the 90 days your insurer has stipulated, so not the six months you intend to be there, and as BoGoF has suggested, you'd be well-advised to take out comprehensive insurance.0

Thanks for your reply. Yes the insurer says that the european cover is for 90 days, but I am just wondering if it is against the rules by DVLA or laws in EU.0 -

Wondering if whats against the rules?.....the 90 day restriction. Of course not, if you want more than the 90 day cover you need to pay for it.0 -

No I post these two together since the topic is related to both of the two forums. Check the time stamp, both threads were posted before first replies.0 -

I think you missed my point here. I mean, if I understand the DVLA correctly, my car is road legal in the UK, i.e. taxed, with valid MOT and insurance, it should be legal in other EU countries as well even after the first 90 days since my car has at least 3rd party cover during the whole insurance period.0 -
The car maybe road legal, but you wont be insured after 90 days, your insurance has told you this.
And if anything happens to your car can you afford to get it recovered and disposed of and buy another car whilst on your trip?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
