Do not buy the cheapest one (50 quid. Brand you've never heard before). Slow connectivity, some maps plain wrong.
Like someone said smartphone map apps are just as good. And as long as you are stationary and parked in a safe place handling the sat nav /phone shouldn't interest law enforcement.0 -
I sometimes use an old standalone GPS and sometime I use a smartphone.
The old standalone GPS doesn't have all the latest routes, but it is reliable.
The smartphones are always up to date, but I have twice had Google Maps lock up and found that I've missed my turning because it hasn't been updating. The Here navigation app allows you to download maps at home, so you shouldn't be reliant on mobile data, but in practice the search functionality still seems to rely on an internet connection and it refused to navigate several times when it didn't have internet access.
If you are going to be very reliant on the sat nav then get a dedicated sat nav for reliabilty. A mobile phone would be good enough for most people, just be sure you have a backup.0 -

BUT
the Route function doesn't and will work fine without a data connection and the pre-downloaded maps
So use the route icon (a forward and right pointing arrow) on the right hand side NOT the search magnifying glass0 -
