Am thinking of getting a used sat nav from ebay or Gumtree but am not sure what to look out for. Have always used atlases before!
Can anyone point me at whatever dos and dont's might be relevant, please? I don't want end up with something that may be unusable for whatever reason or needing an additional expenditure over and above the purchase price.
Any thoughts welcome.

Why a dedicated sat nav ? Most smart phones these days can be used as sat navs. An older sat nav is likely to have out of date mapping info0

I use a £49 tablet with GPS and google maps.
At least it knows my road is now a cul de sac, unlike my 10 year old sat nav.0 -
The battery in an old sat nav may not hold charge. Not an issue if you keep it plugged in.
Sat navs are so cheap, is it worth buying second hand?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

if this post is serious you are about 15 years behind the times as the bus has long been and gone on stand alone satnavs
your best option is google maps as a good navigation system is all about numbers contributing"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

However, remember its now an offence to even touch your smartphone sat-nav when driving even if you are sat in traffic so as long as you don't need to adjust your route and are not tempted to contribute traffic information as you suggest then you should be fine.
That might be one reason for a stand-alone SatNav to some people.0 -

I use an old tom tom. For irregular use its fine as long as you keep in mind roads may have changed. I've only once found a traffic island that wasn't on it.0
