Cutting Down Alcohol Thread

Shaggy, I wonder if perhaps we ought to have a new thread for the new year? I only mention it because we had that very traumatic experience with the other thread disappearing last year, along with some other very large threads I believe.0

I've been reading this thread for a while now and would like to join in as I am determined that 2019 will be the year I shake up my relationship with alcohol, starting with Dry January. I am running the London Marathon and this will be my big motivator hopefully.
Everyone's stories are so inspiring and it has really helped reading about everyone's journeys. I never used to drink and when I was younger it was an occasional drink when I went out. Gradually over the years it has increased and I now find myself drinking 1-1.5 bottles of wine per night at home on my own - my husband doesn't drink. Sometimes I can manage 1-4 nights without it but that is rare and it is pretty much 6/7 drinking nights every week. I tell myself that when Monday comes round it will be different and I won't drink until the weekend but then I do and it is the same cycle every week.
When I do have AF days the first 1/2 are a nightmare as I can't get to sleep but after that I feel so much better but something happens and despite my best attempts at talking myself out of drinking the 'go on it won't hurt to have drink tonight' voice wins and I find myself drinking again.
I am 49 and have pretty much drank every day for the last 10 years. I want to stop but need some support and am hoping that this is the place for me to get the push to cut down significantly.0 -
Hello loopylisajane and welcome to the thread
I'd go so far as to say this thread probably saved my life - I was also drinking way too much on a daily basis and it has really helped me to cut back hugely. It's quite quiet on here at the moment because of the time of year but others will hopefully be along shortly to say hi as well.
If you've been lurking for a while you know how it all works so I'll just say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and I hope you find the thread as helpful as we do.0 -

Hi cathybird, sorry for the bother, but can I change my annual total to 250, please. I've added up this year's AF days and am surprised to find that it was 155, so I want to up the target for next year.
Thank you and shaggy and everyone who takes part for the thread.

Welcome loopyisajane
. If you are planning on Dry January you might also want to look at the 30 Day Challenge, which is free to sign up for and has a lot of useful resources, especially in those early days when not drinking makes you feel worse than drinking! Some of the video content is a bit pop psychology but you can winnow out the useful stuff
