Might even squeeze in another one tomorrow :)

Didn't see the Adrian Chiles programme but will try and watch it on catch-up at some point.

No drinking planned here today. I'm pleased to get in some extra days to make up for holiday drinking in June and July.

  • Hello everyone

I used to be on here ages ago (as Miss Piggy). Couldn't figure out my log-on for that user name so have re-registered  Haven't been on MSE for a long long time but, due to changes in circumstances I'm mooching around the forums again.

We are in the position of having to try and tighten our purse strings...and just to scare myself I sat and worked out what my spending has crept up to again on wine. Its not pretty, and its going to change :o

So does everyone mind if I join in again?? I'm going to go for 22/30 for september please Shaggy

Good to see some familiar faces are still here....and hoping you don't all mind if i creep back in

 Hello Miss Piggy. Great to see you and of course we don't mind you joining in again.:)

Sorry to hear you have to do some belt tightening but you know mse is the best place to help. The price of wine has been steadily creeping up too, so plenty of savings to be made. Good Luck!:)

Hey welcome Miss Piggy  and I've pretty much modelled my whole life on the original Miss Piggy :rotfl: "Never eat more than you can lift", and all that. :)

The only woman included said she'd had a breast cancer diagnosis a few years ago and that had made her want to live life to the full. Her version of doing so was to drink even more heavily than Adrian Chiles during at least one of the evenings they spent together.

The link between breast cancer and alcohol is absolutely proven and clear. If a woman drinks to excess her chances of breast cancer skyrocket. It broke my heart.

Blimey, and you'd think she'd know the connection too Honey Bear :( Surely she was told at the time that drinking was a potential cause? I'd quit straight away, I think!

Interesting articles about Adrian Chiles, must try and catch up with the programme sometime. I've been on holiday most of August and whilst I haven't over indulged I have had a drink or two most days which must be over recommended limits.
So September rapidly approaching, always feels like a new year to me. Please can I have 14 as a target and I hope to exceed that too.

She probably wasn't. It's something that I heard mentioned on Woman's Hour by a specialist and I think it was either a programme on breast cancer, or alcohol consumption, probably more than four years ago because I was still drinking and it scared the living daylights out of me. The gist of it was: We all have a risk of breast cancer; if a woman drinks more than a unit of alcohol a day the risk rises. It then rises exponentially for every unit consumed. I can remember being shocked rigid by it but not enough to make me stop. (When stopping becomes a necessity, that kind of knowledge collected randomly over the years really, really helps.)

If she was treated on the NHS, which is the only healthcare I've ever received, the whole ethos of clinical staff seems to be about the individual's needs, not the education and bollocking of them for past 'mistakes.' It's a question of 'we are where we are' and as a patient I am very, very grateful for that. (I've mentioned an anaesthetist's comment to be about the booze issue several times in the past so I won't repeat it now.) I think the reason is that it doesn't help when you're trying to heal someone.

If she's honest with her team of carers she probably has been told it would be a good idea if she cut down. If she lies about her consumption, then they probably haven't. We know as a society we only admit to drinking half of the amount of alcohol that we buy, so it's a fair assumption that most health care professionals double what patients tell them they drink. However, I've always assumed that really heavy drinkers don't admit to drinking anywhere near half of the total - I never did. I always knew, and said I drank more than I should and in the end was admitting I drank at least twice the recommended maximum but any more than that - Absolutely Not. (Having typed that, I now realise I was ashamed of it, too, but I'd never realised that before. Hmm. They do say people with problems with alcohol live with a fair amount of shame. Apparently it's true of me, too.)

    30/31 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.
