Computer running maddeningly slow

if your having trouble stopping programmes from starting try this old coconut: start, run, type in msconfig, then uncheck a few start up programmes.
P.S. I had that damn Macafee all over my system once, even after uninstalling it it had odds and sods still running in the system, I had to disable them as above, it's as bad as a virus, I would never use it again, not even if they paid me........well maybe then, but they better pay well.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried to stop some of the progs from starting, but I'm getting an 'Access Denied' (which says I may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the changes). Anyone know what that means? Sorry for being such a dimwit:o

Try and start in safe mode - press f8 when your computer starts and select administrator-then see if you can stop things.
