Computer running maddeningly slow

Does your McAfee stuff have an anti-phisting feature? Try turning it off if it does. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Router is Netgear WRG614 (sadly, I don't live on a country estate! Lol!).
Already had older version of Firefox (am downloading current version, but it's taking ages). Tried it and it had the little egg-timer thingy for ages (though I could see the page at least!). At the moment, on IE, when a page eventually appears, the little bar at the bottom (which fills up with green blocks) carries on for several minutes.
I didn't personally install AOL spywear, but it wasn't me who set the computer up from scratch. I never download any additional security as I've been lead to believe that they can conflict with other security (so I've stuck to McAfee). That doesn't mean to say it's not on my computer somewhere though.
I tried turning the anti-phishing thingy off a few days ago, but it didn't help.
I've just tried to disable a couple of start-up progs, but I get an 'access denied'.0 -
Do you only have one PC in the house? Is the pc using wireless or wired?

if you only have one pc and it is using wireless, i'd try to sort out the slowness problem first, before encrypting.. but check no-one else is using your connection

Just one PC in the house (laptop). On wireless. Checked attached devices and there's just one IP address, which I hope is me!
Tried to disable via 'start', 'run', 'MsConfig', 'Start Up'. Also looked on the 'services' bit. Loads of things listed in both which I've no idea about. The computer is only used by me.
Yes, I use Skype.
When I try to get a page to load from this site (for example), I sometimes just get the background page and the page says 'done' at the bottom. I click 'refresh' and the rest of the page appears when it reloads. Just adding that in case it means something!0 -
Hi try and get Adaware and run that. Also you can start getting rid of some of the stuff Hijack-this found -it will make a backup of every thing you delete so if there is a problem after just restore it by viewing hijack this 's backups and clicking to restore -do this a piece at a time.0

Hi spakkker,
I downloaded AdAware and ran it, but it didn't find anything. I don't really understand the Hijackthis thing. Is it telling me which files MIGHT have a problem, or is it just a list of what's running at the moment? If I start deleting them I won't actually know the affects throughout my computer will I?
In a desperate attempt, I took the computer back 5 weeks last night with System Restore. It seemed to improve it quite a bit (well, at least back to how it was before it went totally loopy), but this morning it's back to square one again :-(0 -
<P>Hi hijack does only suggest -you can check an item and then click on the info button lower down ,then you can google the item see what it says. I think its the amount of unnecessary stuff running that is your prob.eg netwaiting seems to be a dial up prog. You could try and work through this-http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm or it may be quicker to re-install , maybe you got a repair option, see handbook. Mcaffee seems to be everywhere maybe try something else.this site links to a lot of good free stuff -http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20#other</P>0
