Computer running maddeningly slow

Can anyone kindly advise me?

My computer has been running quite slow for a long time, but now it's got to the point where it's so slow I am struggling to use it. It's been mega-slow for over a week now. I've tried System Restore but to no avail.

Each page takes forever to load (even if I click on the 'Back' button, it takes ages to get the page up). I wait several minutes for a page to load, then end up clicking 'refresh' and waiting for 2 or 3 minutes more.

I've downloaded the Hijackthis thingy and have managed to get the info ready to post on here if someone could help. Could I just check that I wouldn't be posting anything which could jeopardise my security?

I am not very good with the techie side of computers, so I'd appreciate any advice at a 'Sooty and Sweep Understand Computers' level:o

THANK YOU so much in advance!

How can anyone make sense of all that???!
  • JEEZ! what a lot of crap running! svchost.exe is a very commen cpu eater and can chew up 60-90% of your cpu slo w i n g your system right down as differant programmes access it do a google or whoever for svchost.exe you will get results like this http://forums.vnunet.com/thread.jspa?messageID=744478&#744478 but you will need to do a bit of homework yourself, chances are it's corrupt, have fun looking.
P.S. do a ctrl alt delete and enter task manager and see what is using your cpu most.
There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...
  • God, thats alot of McAfee services. No wonder it's so slow.

You can disable all the itunes, phone stuff, quick time, dell support, adobe stuff. It's not required on startup, and will slow you down some.

Personally, I'd get rid of all the McAfee software. Can't stand it. Either that or reinstall it, with minimal options because it looks like you've got the complete package there :(

    AOL doesn't help either ;)

:o Sorry sleep2much, that doesn't mean anything to me:o but thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks, Honest_Chris. Sorry, but I'm a real beginner, so could really do with some more clarification.

    1) I don't know how to disable stuff:o
    2) If I uninstall McAfee, which bits do I need when I reinstall?
    3) I don't use AOL, so don't know how to get rid of that either (can I just go via the add/remove progs bit??). I use Internet Explorer.

    Gawd, sorry I'm such a numpty:o :o Maybe I shouldn't be allowed to use a computer....lol!

I've just realised how many embarrassed smilies I've used....:rotfl:

how much ram (memory) have you got? right click on my computer/properties to find out

    Do you have a router?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Hi albertoss,

I have 504 MB of RAM (thanks for telling me how to find it!). Yes, I have a router.
  • 1) Start->Run->MsConfig then uncheck all the things you don't want to run when your PC starts up
    2) You only really need McAfee antivirus, so you could do a custom install with only AV selected. XP has a built in firewall, or if you have a router, that will act as a firewall.
    3) See (1). If it's installed some junk, you can remove via add/remove programs.

I'd also suggest running something like ccleaner to blast all the temp internet files, cookies, etc. You can manage your startup items with that too, I think, if you don't want to use MSconfig. *edit* i see the poster above mentioned ccleaner - an excellent choice :)

albertross, I get 2060kbps download speed and 237kbps upload speed.

Yes, I think it's just the internet that's slow (I don't use the computer for much else really).

I did the ccleaner a couple of days ago (hey, I'm not as numpty-ish as I thought I was!!), but it didn't speed things up :-( It's certainly getting worse :-( Taking me ages to send my replies.

Yes, McAfee is up to date :-)

Yes, the router is wireless. Not sure if it's encrypted (not sure what that means!). Does that mean whether it's secured or not? I know it's unsecured as I set it up myself about 18mths ago and didn't know how to secure it.

Thanks, Honest_Chris, I'll unchecck the things I don't want in the start up. I'm not really sure what some of the progs are, so am wary of uninstalling them incase I make a mess. I suppose some of them are obvious though, like AOL!

Thanks for helping me guys :-)

Unless you live on a country estate, you really need to secure/encrypt the router. Which router is it.

The download speed you got is not too bad.

Try firefox to see if it is an IE issue

    http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

did you install aol spyware protection

    do you use skype?

if aol is mentioned in controlpanel/addremove programs, I would uninstall them
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
