You might or might not be ok. It’s only models starting with a particular serial number code which designates the memory capacity.
For the Start 25, it’s those with a serial number beginning with BK.

TomTom now seem to have apologised for some confusion and added clarification to their website.
It appears that the lifetime updates will continue but you won’t be able to purchase map updates for the older pre-lifetime models.

Thanks for the link. My TomTom is one of the ones affected but I am still confused.
What is the difference between renewing a map and updating it?
I am also confused about the space issue. My TomTom's hard drive is less than 50% full.0 -
The real benefit of using something like google maps is that it will accurately give you an estimated time based on current traffic and will reroute you so that your always on the fastest route. For me if the satnav just shows you the fastest route but doesn't take into account of traffic then it's not very useful because i always look at the route beforehand so i know where i'm going anyway.
My 5+ year old Garmin does that.0 -
The problem with Google maps is that I cannot get the whole of UK on one map so cannot plan a full route from N Scotland to S England.
I don't understand why you have a problem. I just looked at Lands End to John o'Groats and it was fine.
I used Google Maps for a 3000 mile road trip in the US last year. I downloaded the areas I visited into 20 off line maps so I didn't use any data while I was driving. Lucky I did use Google Maps as it told me that Highway One was closed, something I wouldn't have known if I had tried to rely on my old Tom Tom.
I checked the maps at the start of most trips using hotel WiFi.
You can buy a functional smart phone with a 5" screen for about £100 or less, and you don't have to use data.0 -

the point was the accuracy due to the number of google users"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

The (slightly) older models came with a map installed and you pay TomTom each time you want to update/renew the map.
The later models came with free lifetime updates so you just regularly plug the satnav into a computer and it updates the maps for no additional fee. It appears these won’t be affected, although it’s still not that clear.
I suspect the memory capacity issue is a bit of an excuse for where to draw the line, some might start to struggle but equally others could probably run new maps fine.0 -

I have a very early TomTom, the maps haven't been updated for years, but it will definitely be going with us to Italy this year. The last time we went OH insisted we leave the TT behind, the map on his smartphone got it's knickers knotted and kept sending us up and back the same piece of dual carriageway. We could still be there now.........
Had to stick in some other random address that wasn't where we were headed for then reprogramme it a few miles down the road.
The old TT knows where we are going in Italy.Make £2025 in 2025

That could easily have been either a duff app/duff Italy maps or a duff GPS chip in the phone.
Yes, it was your experience ... hardly symptomatic of all phones and satnav apps though.0
