Sudden noise complaint - help

Hi, I am new, hope you can help and sorry if this has come up before.
We purchased our top floor flat in early December. The owners told us they had installed soundproof underflooring underneath the wooden floors in 2015 and it had never been a problem . So yesterday I had a letter from the management company saying they have received complaints and I must install adequate soundproofing to comply with the lease (which states wall to wall carpeting or soundproofing) . I can't afford to pull up floorboards and install soundproofing or carpet the whole flat for a while we already had to replace the boiler as soon as we moved. I honestly don't know what to do and the previous owners obviously could have said whatever they like to sell the property. Does anyone have any advice of how I could potentially handle this without having to do this - and whether there is anything in the fact this has been in place for years!
Thanks,
MSS

Turn the music etc down or buy some cordless headphones
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • get some cheap carpet and lay it over the wooden floor for now till you can afford.. Or try buying some rugs.. Chairs moving can be the biggest noise on wooden or laminate flooring... My useful tip is glue a bit of carpet to the bottom of the chair leg, gets rid of that awful squeal.

What does your lease say about flooring?

    Rugs are cheap.

Far cheaper would be to fix two carpet off-cuts onto the soles of your shoes - no need then for carpeting the floor
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may

What types of noise are the complaints about?
Can you find out if there was an issue with the previous occupants?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Wooden floors probably. Often not permitted for obvious reasons.

pop to poundland and get some lino tiles and glue over the laminate flooring until you can afford to do the flooring as desired.
  • I have beautiful oak wood flooring. I really don't want to ruin it if i dont have to. happy to put rugs all over. the sellers obviously lied about sound proofing like they also lied about a working boiler. will speak to property management company on Monday to see what the options are.
