Hi,
We have had an usual marketing campaign for roof coating and then surveyor on the back of it from the company called "Easy Coat Limited" - They claim to use Renotec roof coating and have exclusive rights in the South East as the only tradesmen to offer that.
All well and good and quite liked the surveyor explained everything clearly and also went around did a full survey to make sure our roof is eligible and that it would involve replacing any unsuitable / cracked tiles etc.., and their installation as well seemed methodical and all credentials around certificate from trading bodies, insurance backed guarantee for both manufacturer and their install/work of it.
Initially, list price was £5522 and then obviously they had something around show home discount of 22-25% on this - Our roof is 1950's 3 bedroom semi detached house and higher pitch.
Wanted to take a general opinion on what other people have experienced and in general about roof coating - He said that new roof would cost almost double the list of price of theirs.
Any thoughts on people who have experience in this?

100% pure snake oil, sold by travelling sales people who masquerade as "surveyors". These folks come across who are "quite liked" Which of course means the introductory con trick has worked and the following sales pitch is working.
There will then be an offer of an inflated price but magically discounts start to appear. A typical ruse will be to call the home a "show home" then offer a discount. Of course nobody will ever come to see the "show home". Which means nobody will be crawling on the roof to inspect the snake oil finish. Just as well really!
Amazingly, in this enlightened age, with 24/7 access to information people still get taken in.0 -
The first thought is "What problem do you have with your roof that 'coating' is going to cure?"Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

This is now two opinions, not connected, but using exactly using the same terminology. Both opinions come from individuals who work in the construction industry.
Back to OP. Will this be your wake up call?0 -

General Moss, Lichen build up, and then Ridge tiles showing eroded mortar and then further problems due to the roof being about 50 years old - Build was 1960.
So it was more on future proofing is what he was coming from.
Again - It was since I was unaware of this, I have asked in the forum just to take general advice from people you have done this sort of thing - This is the trader - easyquoteltd (Can't seem to reply with their web address) - If anybody has encountered or have had any experience dealing with?.....0 -
Dont waste your money. No coating will fix eroded mortar only redoing will. You can kill moss, lichen other ways using a moss killer. I did this myself many times using a product called patio magic there are many other products on market that do the same. I spray it with a garden sprayer on jet mode whilst on top of some ladders, and it works. I also do my flat roofs as I have several, two garages and a bay, front porch some are North facing tand get a little moss and slippery if I am on the flat roof cleaning windows I do this job a week before0

Mortar erodes. It needs replacing, not “coating”.
Houses don’t need coating, roof tiles and bricks are the coat. Lichen build up is not a problem, it doesn’t affect whether or not your roof works. A coat of spray is not going to really make it last longer - certainly not compared to the cost.
Entire replacement roofs are not so expensive - if you need one, that is.
It is plain and utter rubbish that you are being sold. I have seen the likes of this on Watchdog!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Rubbish product and a complete and utter scam.
If roof need attention either replace some tiles, slates or a entire new roof which wont cost much more than what you been quoted. Same goes for ridge tiles.
My roof is almost 80 years old, rosemary tiles and had new ridge tiles a few years back. It does need doing in next 10 years or less though0 -

This is their approach for installation as I was told - They said no obligation quote but having got the surveyor its more tempting discount - which probably does not feel right but then again I do not have enough knowledge in the subject and the comment here help in general:
1. Pre-spray work - Fix cracked tiles, redo mortar on the ridge tiles and wherever its eroded
2. Do pressure cleaning on the roof tiles
3. Anti-fungal quote
4. 3 quotes of renotec roof spray
5. Do all post cleaning work - Including guttering, steam cleaning windows etc.., - Including neighbours if the cleaning has caused dust etc..,

There is an article by Jeff Howell on Telegraph that sums it all up about these roof coating scams...Thanks guys for your comments..0
