  • Of course you should. You cancelled at short notice and you friend is out of pocket. Why is this even a question? It’s just decency.

    Yes.

(Why do I have to use 10 characters for such an obvious answer?)
  • Yes, she'll need that money to rebook.

I do think a bit depends on how well off either side is. I am 'elderly' and a lot better off than most of the kind young people who might invite me. I also often choose to book the cheapest ticket, knowing it's a bit of a gamble.
I agree that an offer might be nice, which I expect all but the most hard-up to refuse.
However if the younger people are not well off, and they know that the 'elderly' friend is, then a simple apology is all that is necessary. I am remembering that this was illness, not a whim.
I know it's hypothetical, but hope you all have a lovely time together when the visit 'happens'!
  • I so agree that you should have offered straight away, a bit surprised you are asking.
Keep on trying it will be your turn soon x

You should advise other in how she can claim a refund less an admin charge, and if she can't get a refund offer to pay next time you arrange a visit.

  • Train tickets are not cheap. It is regrettable you had to cancel but you should just send her the money or at the very least a gift card
  • She will most likely refuse but I think it's only fair you offer to reimburse your relative for the train ticket.
Think about if the shoe was on the other foot; you would appreciate the offer.
