Counter Withdrawal Error

Options
Apologies but I’m new today to the forum & unsure where I should post this. Please direct me if this is not the place to post this.
I withdrew some money over the counter at a Bank. When I got home I realised it was short by a large amount of money. I called logged the issue and was called back 2 days later returning my money with an apology. They said it was a bank error.
Can I be compensated for the 2 days of stress worrying if I would get my money back?

I have moved the posts over to a new thread in the Budgeting and Bank Accounts section for you.

You don't lose anything by asking, but it may be that they argue that you should have noticed the error while still at the bank.

Were you withdrawing from an interest paying account? You could try asking for the lost interest if so, as they won't have been paying interest on the money again until it was returned to your account.

You can complain and ask for a goodwill gesture but you're not entitled to compensation unless you actually lost money as a result of their error.

But you were at the counter. The cashier would have counted the money in front of you.

Why did you not spot the mistake at the time?

If you ask and the bank agrees, you'll be compensated. There's not a fixed rule that says you must be. £25 would be more than reasonable.

Should you compensate them for not checking your receipt?
  • Why would you be compensated?

The money would have been counted in front of you, and common sense says to also count it yourself before stepping away from the counter.

What exactly are you being compensated for?

Words fail me but yes you might get a gesture if you ask nicely.

Personally, I'd slap myself round the head for not checking myself.

Mistakes happen but OP could have avoided the two days of ''stress'' - that's why I'd see it as shared blame

OK perhaps words didn't fail me

PS I so wish the word 'compensation' didn't exist - the behaviours it encourages repel me.

Compensation is usually given in recognition of negative financial impact or significant distress and inconvenience. You haven't lost any money so the question is how anxious are you to secure a "shut up and go away" payment in the range of £25-£50? I personally value my dignity a little more than that, but if that couple of notes will keep the bailiffs from your door, go for it I suppose.
