Davearia you said you went onto ukpower website.
https://www.ukpower.co.uk/tools/
Go to link, hover mouse over Home energy and goto where it say "smart meter calculator" and click.
Then click gas cost, don't put email address, untick news/tips part and then put in your postcode and click continue.
When ther put in all you details about supplier, tariff and how you pay and TICK the metric box and then put in readings and then calculate costs and see what prices show up.
Sorry if you have done this already.0 -
@Boohoo I put in the gas figures pretty much reflect the price on the Eon bill0

@Hengus you were mentioning earlier how boilers modulate. First thing at 8:00 am it took 15 minutes to get to 19c where it used 1m3 of gas but as you said there will be a big demand initially and the boiler may work at max which might explain this. But subsequent times since when the temperature drops just beneath 19c and the boiler kicks in, the meter usage looks just the same i.e. no sign of modulation. The readings on the meter suggest this also. Could this be the problem? i.e. boiler not modulating?
How old is your Glow warm boiler? Many older boilers were non-modulating - they fired up and went to full output until the set water temperature was reached, or the room thermostat switched the boiler off.
Essentially if it was possible for a 28kW boiler to run flat out for an hour it will use 28 kWh!! ie. approx 2.5 metric gas units. The output will be less depending on the efficiency of the boiler.
Thus the maximum it could use in 5 minutes is approx 0.2 gas units - not over 0.4 gas units you say your boiler had used.0 -
The boiler is around 4 years old. Yesterday the meter at least read that the boiler used 0.4m3 in around 5 minutes. I'm timing/reading todays start up now and see what I get. Today I'm running at 20c to see what impact that has as opposed to yesterdays 19c test.0

Same here, since switching to Eon last year my gas bill is nearly double, also when deducting what I have paid from the current bill there is a hefty difference in their favour. I am beginning to think that this switching nonsense is rapidly becoming a scam. As soon as the 50 days are up I'm off. Anyone like to check my sums- bill £597 ,paid to date - £295 balance due £360 ??
Gas last year 12500 kwh with Eon 22400 kwh .Nothing changed here, I'm a retired heating engineer and RGI so I do know how boilers and controls work. I also know how to read and check a meter and the boiler gas rate. There are snakes in the grass somewhere.0 -

Prices have risen - particularly, for electricity over the past 12 months due to a large increase in the Social and Environmental Cost element of our bills (govt policy). Forget about monthly DD payments , credits and debits for the moment. Irrespective of the supplier that you choose you will only pay for the energy that you use at the agreed tariff rate plus VAT. Monthly DD payments are nothing money that a chunk of money put into a Piggy Bank from which billing charges are deducted. This can lead to a credit/debit balance. Some suppliers are not happy with debit balances so they increase the monthly payment to stop a debt building up.Unless this is reversed in the Spring, it can lead to a credit balance building up.
Bigger suppliers tend to allow some consumer debt as they have the financial reserves to do so.
None of the above is a scam. We all pay for the energy used and no more. If your gas bill has doubled then you need to check that the meter reading does not have a big 'E' against it for estimated. If it does, then provide E.oN with an actual meter reading and they will adjust your bill. If an "A" or 'C' has been annotated against the meter reading, then you have used more energy. It has been a cold Winter. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

As you are so much in credit the DD must have been set very high. Eon will have set this according to what you told them (hopefully in kwh and not in £). How does your consumption compare with what you estimated ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

How is switching nonsense becoming a Scam? You can read what you will be paying by looking at the charge per kWh and whatever your daily charge is. You know your consumption so it basically simple maths. As has been pointed out its been colder this winter so far compared with last. Therefore you would expect to use more. How often do you read your meter? Have you kept a record of when it was used? When you say last year what period are you referring too?
You pay for what you use. If your consumption has increased by 9900 kWh's then its down to you! not Eon! Oh unless the meter has changed.
Its simple to work out if what you are paying per kWh has increased by checking your previous bills. If you are in debt to E-on its due to your DD being too low.
What has 50 days got to do with anything? Is it when your fix is up?
If you had gone through and read the whole thread you would see it is not down to Switching to E-on that Davearia's cost are so high. Maybe you should get your posts moved to a separate thread and take your problem up with E-on as you posts puts the blame on them.3.795 kWp Solar PV System. Capital of the Wolds0 -
OP, you've received some good advice already on possible boiler modulation or meter issues, so I can't add anything useful to that. However you really do need to address your leccy usage as well. It's not average at all, it's nearly twice what would be expected in a 3 b/r house with gas CH and DHW. What other high-use devices do you have? Tumble drier, electric shower, lots of halogen downlighters, fish tanks...?
The chance of one faulty meter is small, the chance of two is minute. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Are you definitely sure your previous consumption was 12500 kWh. On quotes thats the Ofgem figure for the typical user? What was your actual use0
