We only have heating with gas. When we moved in the central heating was on a one pipe system. Last winter (2016/2017) we had 2 electric heaters to make up for the poor central heating. This has now been replaced for a flow and return piping last Autumn so we were hoping that the combination of correct piping and no electric convector heaters we'd be quids on. July - Octobers bill seemed promising being over £200 cheaper that same quarter last year. But Octobers - January is the exact opposite.

What sort of controls have you got on the heating/hot water system. Is it a combi boiler or have you got a hot water tank.

They are actual readings for the meter so it's an A. It's a combi boiler. Looking to lag some of pipes under the house. The TVRs were free with the radiators so maybe not the best.

Have you got a timer or programmable thermostat to control your on/off times and temperatures.

Just checked my consumption after reading this, it says I only used 2600 KW hour in a full year. :O

I thought I was using too much electric, which got me thinking of buying a heat pump drier but would take too long to pay itself off.

My electric bill nearly doubled in August because I got a bigger fridge, a 4k 55" TV from a 42" and a drier.

I bought a 3 pin plug tester which tells you how much wattage your equipment is using. On standard settings my 55" tv was using 170 Watts per hour  compared to my old TV which was only 30 Watts. I changed the settings to energy saving "Medium" which lowers the backlight a bit but it dropped the watts to 60 which hardly reduces the brightness of the picture but reduced the wattage/H by so much.
I think the standard settings was way to bright anyway as it hurts your eyes a bit watching it at night.

Also to add the, TV is on most of the day as other half is home most of the day. 7AM till about 11/12PM as i fall asleep most of the times with the TV on :D

Maybe its worth buying one and testing all the equipment in your house

I have programmable timer and yesterday I have lowered this down to 20C for day and night till 10 pm hoping this makes a difference. But just looked at the gas meter which was read at 32698 4 days ago and is already got to 32766. This is really starting to turn into a nightmare.

Cannot understand why this quarter last year with one pipe central heating system that due to its poor performance never seemed to go off used 410m3 less gas I just can't.

In paranoid mode, watched the boiler fire up, set for 19c. In just over 5 minutes the meter have clocked over .4m3 of gas. I know it is firing up first thing but does that not seem a lot?

In the 15 minutes it took to get to 19c the meter says I've used around 1m3

    A 28kW boiler using around 5kWh in 5 minutes? so 60kW
  • We have had a few instances on here over the years where LCD metric gas meters have gone rogue and added many units..They are E6 type meters made by Siemens and Landys Gyr.
You can ask for a meter check but if the supplier finds it to be OK they can charge you a fee.
Bit of a gamble so you need to be sure that the meter is faulty

    Sorry Cardew,

I'm hopeless at these calcs but I must have used much more than 60KWh?

Worked out the 1m3 is 11.22 kwh
