TomTom stopping my lifetime map updates

Ive had my tomtom go live 820 for a while now, its always served me well when needed. Part of the reason i bought it was it came with ‘Lifetime map updates’
Today i got this email:
Every day, at TomTom, we work very hard to bring you the best navigation experience ever. A big part of this work is to continuously improve the quality of the maps, services and software that your sat nav runs on. It has become clear that some of our older generation navigation devices do not have sufficient resources to run the newest maps and software available.
We will continue to provide quick GPS fix updates so your device will continue to function as it does now, but your map will become out-of-date and as such navigation will be less accurate.
For this reason, we have had to stop software updates, sales of map updates and other services as of January 2018. Your trusted device will still work perfectly but you will no longer be able to buy any further map update.
The latest generation of TomTom devices now come with Free lifetime updates for World Maps, Traffic and Speed cameras. Maps, services and software are easily updated via Wi-Fi without the need to connect to a computer. They are also the fastest devices we have ever built, with quad core processors and 16GB of memory (expandable via SD card).
So, theyre basically telling me my device which i paid £150 for at the time will no longer be eligible for updates. Not even any notice given so I could have a chance to update to the latest maps, and as such are trying to flog me a new sat nav.
Anyone else had the email?

The problem is that the newer maps are larger files, and the functions ever more memory-hungry. The hardware becomes incapable of running the ever-evolving software. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Perfenctly normal
Lifetime is the lifetime of the product, and always has been for lifetime updates.
Use google maps on your phone like everyone else and save yourself some money.0 -
"Use google maps on your phone like everyone else and save yourself some money."
Not "everyone else" has a mobile data allowance, I and many others don't, so that isn't possible.
It is possible to download offline maps but they don't offer spoken directions.0 -
Each to their own ... I use Google Maps but actually turn the audio prompts off as they interfere with the radio/music/whatever else I'm listening to.0

I feel mis sold, nearly £300 for a device I can no longer useDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

How is that saving money if you bought the device?
This is not a discussion of whether to buy but the fact that extra was paid for lifetime replacement which the majority of people will understand as until the item no longer works.
I bought our larger screen one at higher cost than a basic, because lifetime upgrades should be cheaper than constantly paying.
The lifetime element is very much part of the price, as the next new model included free lifetime speed cameras at a much higher price and reviewers said the new facility was not worth the cost so stick with for just the free maps upgrade.
As above notice to upgrade as a last chance was not given and ours is out of date at the moment.
If lifetime meant 'for as long as we want to sell this model' we could be conned into buying items with a life just beyond warranty,if greedy manufacturers choose to change unnecessarily .
There is no need for vast amounts of information making the model obsolete, as we don't all want world maps ,with Europe or even UK being quite sufficient.0 -

As I understand it if your tomtom has 2gb space and no micro SD slot it will end up on the list of non supported devices
My Go Live 820 has 6gb of space plus micro SD slot so I should be ok for now0 -
They stopped them on my older model some time ago for the same reason, even though I had a bigger memory card in it.
For a few days I felt the same way, but then moved over to use google maps on my phone with a cheap holder. I wouldn't go back, just being able to talk to it navigate is liberating.
If you don't have data allowance you can download goolgemap areas to your device in advance while on Wifi.0 -

yes occasionally theres a roundabout where it doesn't expect one, but the vast majority of the time its just as workable as it ever was.
My husband uses ours, as he is a professional driver and it is still OK for the areas he covers but it is out of date as we never did an internet upgrade after purchase and have had no notice toenable us to do so.
You don't choose to pay for an upgrade (fair enough) but people who bought ''lifetime upgrade models a have paid in advance for something they won't be getting.0
