  • According to tiptopsecurity.com, Mcaffee is referred to as; "boatware" "junkware" "crapware".They state that is pretty useless that it is not anti virus and won't remove any malware in the community. It goes on to say it's a half hearted pseudo security solution a form of advertising and that if your firewall is enabled you will be fine.
It also goes onto show how simple it is to uninstall in about three or for steps. I'm sure that the 'experts' at Currys PC world could manage that, I could forward them the video.

In terms of not being tech savvy enough to know that the computer would make a noise, no I'm not psychic, but I'm more than competent to return the machine back to factory settings if needs be and moreover I'm sure 'experts' would be too, if not I'll send them the video.

In regards to it being acceptable not to refund because it had data on it, the only data it had on it was the application that they installed which could easily be uninstalled.

All in all Lesson learn't good and proper.
Never set foot again inside a Currys PC World.
    Inform others of CPCW.
    Go back to a Mac.
Always ask about the return policy upfront before purchase ask another person just incase.
Don't agree to any protection payment plan. Ask them to give you details that you can go away and read to understand.
When purchasing a high price item that you want to perform for your needs give yourself 2-3m months beforehand to do the above.

Thank you all for your replies:(:):(:):(:money:
  • I have been stung by Currys before too and would never purchase there again.
John Lewis for us every time

Hope it gets quieter over time for you!

    Nothing unusual in that.
After all, don't many of the regular posters on here work for Argos/Paypal/eBay etc?

Am guessing the OP copied and pasted a letter to the Guardian here ;)

Leaving aside 'why would you shop with the mega DSG to support the local community?' conundrum, I have to ask the OP, why did you buy an insurance policy on a device that already has a 12m manufacturer's warranty?
If you'd gone to JL, you'd have a 2 year retailer's warranty, and they would have price matched it too (if more expensive). And they wouldn't have flogged you a useless AV program for a machine that already comes with Windows Defender installed.
Sadly, we have heard this kind of story so often before from DSG customers (that's why they're regularly ranked as the UK's worst retailer).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If you want full service from an in store purchase you have to buy from somewhere that provides it - for instance, John Lewis, but not Currys. It may not even be any more expensive.
Do John Lewis allow change-of-mind returns on a used laptop purchased in store?
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

The only mention of computers related to their goodwill return policy (normally in the first 35 days) is

"computer software vouchers that have been redeemed, or computer software that has been opened"

    https://m.johnlewis.com/customer-services/returns/our-refund-policy

That to me wouldn't stop you returning a laptop as long as you didn't try to claim for any software that you'd installed on it. But even then I would expect JL to be more accommodating than most in coming to an agreeable conclusion.

It depends on exactly how they define "used".
Unless faulty, this should be within 35 days of receiving your order. By original condition, we’d expect this to mean that you’ve kept packaging and labels, and that the item is undamaged and unused
•Please return any unwanted item, unless faulty, in its original condition. We'd expect this to mean that:

it's undamaged and unused (excludes normal examination of the product as you might do in store)

you haven't entered any personal data on to the product

If you've simply powered it up to look at the screen then that should be okay (IMO) as this is what you might do in store but if you've gone as far as registering the computer or operating system then they may refuse the refund.
