I hang my head in shame at some of the things I have found. Yesterday was a tin of rice pudding from 2014 (it was lovely!). Now I have discovered a pizza base mix and batter mix from even earlier.

I thought I might make toad in the hole with the batter mix. I'm not too keen on homemade pizza, as I can never roll the base thin enough. I am having curry for tea tonight, can i adjust the cooking to make a naan or flatbread or similar? I hate to throw anything away (unless its dairy or green meat, then its for the bin).

Next job is sorting out the spices!!!

  • clairski you have found a veritable treasure chest ignore the dates and just enjoy eating up what ever is edible Well done on your finds I think we all have stuff shoved at the back of the cupboards I found no less than 28 packet mixes last year when I had a good tun out of my cupboards.I put then in a plastic tray on the side in the kitchen and have been using them up at least 1 or two a week if I can. They ranged from rice to pasta and mixes for casseroles etc Nearly all were impulse buys that had been reduced as end of lines anyway Freeze dried pasta will revive with boiling water No different than the stuff that is taken on exploring expeditions :) So eat up your 'treasures and enjoy Pop into our Love Food,Hate Waste forum we are a great bunch and you may get some good ideas for using up stuff .

:)A couple of years ago, towards the end of a month, I was in local cheapie shop and saw trays of 1 doz tins of rice pudding. They were marked at something ridiculous, like 30p for the tray. I picked up 3 but couldn't carry any more. The sales assistant very seriously warned me that they would be out of date at the end of the month and need to be eaten up soon. Of course, we used them up gradually and they were fine, and would still be fine now if there were any left.

Yesterday I found an unopened packet of suet bbe Sept 2012 - that wasn't good :(

Son grouched his preferred sort of packet rice was all eaten by evil brothers - so I said briskly he should get a chair & empty the entire cupboard. Then supervised, so he carried on after he'd found another 5 packets shoved to the back. My reputation as a skinflint replaced by loving mother hiding treats for sad children... (Actually I am much shorter than them & a bit disorganised, but when this sort of thing works, they are So Pleased!)

Husband was proposing a trip over the Pennines to resupply on Hendersons relish - and I peered into the far corner of a cupboard & yes! Still 8 bottles of the original dozen from last foray. The perils of height, some days.

I always stretch the dough rather than roll it. I put the dough in the centre of a pizza tray then slowly use my palm to spread the dough to the edges of the tray. Takes a while but you went up with a lovely, thin and crispy pizza base.

This isn't an answer to the question you asked. But I use naan breads as pizza bases. They turn out very nice. :)
  • Thanks all for your replies. The Love Food Hate Waste thread is great and given me lots of inspiration.

I used up the pizza base mix with a curry. First day I divided into six, rolled them out and topped two each with chilli oil, garlic and olive oil and mixed herbs with olive oil. Next day just rolled into one circle and used like naan. They were edible but 'heavy' in the middle, possibly the yeast had gone past its best. I also found a lemon pie mix, bbe Jan 2013. Didn't seem to thicken up so added some cornflour and used a biscuit base. Tasted ok, will probably be better today when it has set more in the fridge.
Think I need to use up my Amoy curry sauce pouches next. Not too keen on Thai but will give them a go!
  • I made a cheeseburger the othee day with cheese slices bb march 2016... absolutely fine! I suspect more slice than cheese...

I feel hard-done-by now - my food cupboards are arranged with almost military precision, and everything is used in rotation (when I purchase a "cupboard staple" it gets put behind any of the same that are already there iyswim) and it's all documented on a spreadsheet as well, so there's absolutely zero chance of me finding any "hidden treasures" in my cupboards or freezer. :D

I'm the same LW with the cupboards except I don't have a spreadsheet showing what I've got in there - I can see at a glance what's left as the tins are all in rows. Packets are kept in a plastic box.

Rice & Pasta are in plastic tubs with a pourer lid. Cereals are also in plastic tubs with pourer lids.
