    Hi Folks

I'm interested in doing some tutoring. I've got a weird educational history with an undergrad degree in Design, an MA in Cultural Studies and now I'm currently in the 3rd year of a Sociology PhD. I'd like to get some teaching experience in the year and a half I have left, hopefully teaching a module or two next year at uni. I also thought of private tuition. Do you think an agency would accept me as I still haven't actually finished a degree in Sociology? Teaching is the family business, but I don't have any teaching qualifications. Would it be appropriate for me to tutor without these? Perhaps I should be taking an evening class first? Any advice from those more experienced would be much appreciated.

Hi. What are you planning on tutoring? If it's a popular subject, I would just advertise locally and see what response you get (or on a website like First tutors). You don't need a teaching qualification to tutor, just need to know your subject inside out and be able to communicate well with your students (and build their confidence levels).

    Hi Folks

I teach maths up to GCSE level. I have not got many students on my books at the moment, and I am now thinking of expanding my student base by creating a webstie and doing some advertising & marketing. However, I need some advice on this.

How will I be able to tell that this will be a profitable thing to do and that my website is visited by 'lots' of people?

I also want to do 1 to 1 tuition over the internet. How do I go about doing that? Would I need any special software?

Thanks in advance for your response.

I run a couple of tuition services (one web-based, one agency), my thoughts:

    - Quite right that qualified teachers normally charge more. Do charge what you're worth and check your local area to see what others are charging and relate that to your own qualifications/experience. Happy to advise on how to do this via PM.

    - Go easy on agencies - they aren't taking a third of your money, they are usually taking a third of the parent's fees - i.e. the parents never perceive this portion of money as yours and they are the clients. Parents are paying them to be the third person in your relationship so that if there are issues there is someone on hand to resolve them and so that they have someone they can talk to and ask for independent advice from regarding their child's education. That's what a decent agency should be adding in terms of value.
Agencies don't pull clients out of the sky, they have to advertise for them and promote their business to bring you work - that's what the revenues cover. Basically, if they are the hand that feeds you it is rather rude to bite it. Contrary to popular belief, only a handful are making any money.

    - There is a shortage of tutors - my web-based business is crying out for them. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I will give you the URL (don't want to be acused of spamming with commercial URLs).

    - Do be firm in terms of your expectations from tutees at the outset. If you won't accept less than 24 hours cancellation notice without charging, tell them so otherwise people will take the ...
Please send me your URL, as per your posting.

  • Hi. Can anyone give me a hand? I have been reading thru a lot of these posts and have enquired on a couple of websites but they only seem to want UK based teachers.
I am British working in Spain as an English teacher at a distant education academy. Have been doing so for more years than I care to remember! I also have a teaching certifcate (I think that was before they became Cert Ed......but not sure) and my speciality was English literature .
I need some extra cash, (don't we all) and have quite a bit of free time at the weekend and evenings as I am a widow and live alone. I am trying to find something I can do from home here in Spain. I am also a competent typist so wouldn't mind doing some transcribing. Or translating - English / Spanish: Spanish / English. I also used to write articles, in English, for our in house magazine for our English students.
Any help or suggestions more than gratefully received.

    :D

    Hi all,
I have started thinking about private tutoring recently and have been reading the posts here.
I have a Beng in Mechanical Engineering, a Diploma in Sales, 4 years of Engineering experience and 3 yrs of sales experience.
I live in Birmingham - Solihull area. I am curious about the going rate in this area.

I am thinking of doing academic subjects - Maths. Also science. Upto to GCSE at first and then A level later.

I dont have any formal teachning qualifications, but like working with children and like to see the efforts of my work. i.e. they do well at their exams and subjects. I was also thinking of travelling to the students homes.

I want to enquire about the following please:
1 - where do i get exam papers from?
2 - where do i get sylabuses for the subjects of the students i want to tutor?
3 - Which are good agencies to start of with?
    4 - How do i get a CRB check?
5 - How many types of CRB's are there? I have seen an enchanced CRB check on the posts.
6 - Any general advice you have for me as i am new to tutoring?

Thanks for any help you are able to provide.
    Regards
    Manz

    Hi Folks

I have been doing private tuition for the last 5 years or so - mainly teaching maths up to GCSE level. I mainly advertise through the local paper and word of mouth. This academic year, I am planning to expand this and to also teach via internet - skype etc, and also to students from other countries who need basic maths skills. I also want to set up a website to advertise my services and perhaps create an e-book which would have all topics such as algebra, triginometry etc, which the students need to learn in order to prepare for their GCSE level exam.

Where could I get the info, help, and advice from, in order to do all the above? Do you think I am taking on too much?

Thanks in advance for your response.
  • Hi everybody.

I am a recent graduate with a degree in Education Studies (and three years of Primary Education prior to the course swap) and I am interested into going into tutoring. I did get an AB in AVCE Health and Social Care (Double) at college and a PTTLS Level 4 award last year.

I have experience of planning lessons, reading the curriculum and other duties as needed as a tutor but I am nervous about setting myself up as self-employed.

Would I be able to help tutor children in primary subjects based on my degree? Or tutor young adults Health and Social Care considering I got an AVCE in the subject?

Any help would be appreciated. I am going to see a careers adviser on Monday for more advice/guidance.

Don't think you'll find anyone wanting tuition in Health and Social Care!

English and Maths. Plus common entrance subjects, and any subject worthwhile at GCSE.

That's very true about the Health and Social Care part lol. I do have experience of planning and teaching those subjects so once I find a tutee, it would be all about first assessment/discussion etc before going further.

Thank you for your reply :)
