Anyone know if there is much of a demand for tutors in the South Wales area?

I am a qualified primary teacher so would ideally like to work with children of primary age or perhaps children in Y6/Y7 who need extra support. Literacy and maths would be i suppose the subject areas I would tutor in.

Anyone know of reputable agencies local to South Wales?

I'm not sure what area you are thinking of covering but parents where I live will pay a fortune for 11+ coaching. I know its not maths specific but you may be able to branch out - depends if you have the 11+ where you live though.

Advertise in local community centres - places where parents will be hanging about after ballet classes etc and contact your local family information service ( via the council ) they may be willing to list yoru services on their website. Our local authority in conjunction with family info service have a list of tutors availiable for parents. Also try the adult learning section of your council - they might like tutors for evening classes. Then contact some schools directly and see what they say if you offer weekend / holiday sessions for the kids to brush up their skills. They might be willing to adverstise and let you use their facilities and then you charge the parents direct. The library is another place as is the library information service if your council has one. There are often homework clubs advertised / run there.
  • Hi another one here seeking advice re tuition .

I am not a teacher, but I am parent of primary school children and know that many kids in their school and other local schools so attend tuition at weekends mainly. Tbh, many parents are sending the kids for some discipline and for behavioural issues (heard this from a number of parents).

I am now looking at talking to a few teacher friends I know to see if they are interested in setting up a tutition centre, offering small classes which offer chidlren academic support as well as social skills.

Any ideas/comments? We live in an inner city area where people do pay for tution as it is almost seen as a necessity.
  • Does anyoneone have experience with providing private tuition via Skype?
  • I use Skype when doing online sessions. But only for the voice stuff. Everything else is done on Blackboard Collaborate.

Interesting. How does it work? Do you get paid in advance?
I don't mean to be inquisitive, just trying to think of a suitable strategy to make teaching via Skype work.
  • One of my online students pays for a block of sessions in advance via bank transfer. The others pay immediately after their lesson, again by bank transfer.

  • The PGCE has now been changed to Petles and Kettles? Er...no idea what the letters are - either way the course is the same, two years. Oh, you don't have to have a degree to get a teaching qualification (it used to be the CertEd).

They are all part time courses usually one evening a week (dependent on the college that's running it). This will cover lesson plans, SoW, practical teaching (oh yes, you will need to aquire 60 hours of teaching per year - normally over 9 students at any one go), learning styles, risk assessment.....

CTLLS - Certificate in teaching in the life-long learning sector
DTLLS - Diploma in teaching in the life-long learning sector

The first one (PTLLS) doesn't have to be college based and can be delivered in a week long course with a couple of assignments to follow - see CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) for a list of accredited centres in your area

Yes, advance bank transfer for block of sessions seems the practical way to go.
Can you tell me more about Blackboard Collaborate? Is that the same as Elluminate which I've used in the past as a student?
Do you use a digital sketchpad?
I looked at both Blackboard Collaborate & Elluminate but I don't seem to find their single use price.
