I had two new students on Sunday. Another two have recently restarted.
I've also discovered that 4 hours tutoring on the bounce straight after a day in school is not advisable!*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
There are no legal limitations on tutors so you can tutor however much you like for as many pupils as you like. Obviously, if you've got too many pupils and the quality of the tuition suffers, they are unlikely to come back!
To everyone who is asking about cost, this really does vary and the primary factors are geographic area and what type of qualifications you have (teacher, postgrad or undergrad etc.). Without knowing these, it is very difficult to say how much the going rate is. It could be anything between £10 and £40+ per hour for self-employed work.
Insurance-wise, you can take out insurance for tutors but it is not obligatory. You need to weigh up the potential of a claim being made against you and the cost of the insurance premium. If you're tutoring at home, there may be some level of business cover included in your home policy. Speak to your insurer to find out what the state of affairs is with them.
Hope that helps!

A company can request a CRB for an individual.
Although this may all be correct, being a director of a limited company also carries a number of legal responsibilities that you should be aware of. The vast majority of tutors are sole traders.0 -
I have been reading the messages on here with interest. I have some related questions which I hope you don't mind me asking.
My job was made redundant a few weeks ago (along with 50 or so other people). I had worked at the company for nine years as a software design engineer, and have been a programmer pre-dating my time with them for many years.
I would like a career change, or perhaps a career "reversion" would be the better way of putting it, because I would like to get back into teaching. I am not ruling out lecturing, NVQ Assessing, or 1:1 tuition.
I have a Further and Adult Education Teachers' Certificate and D32/D33 which I gained when I was a lecturer in 1991-1995. I was a part-time lecturer at a couple of colleges (with a full-time workload) at that time and this was in the I.T. Departments.
I have approached some local colleges. I am told that to get a Professional Update to A1 should not take long (perhaps a half-hour interview), so it seems that my qualifications will stand me in good stead as an IT Assessor (ITQ).
I have three questions.
1. Any recommendations regarding where to look for lecturing or assessor work?
2. I have access to a grant for a training course, and the time to decide which course to do runs out Friday week (2 April). Any recommendations for a course to help in the lecturing route?
3. I have been thinking about providing private tuition. I have qualification in music as well as I.T. Any recommendations for where to look?
It boils down to somehow getting my foot back on the ladder.
My thanks in advance for your constructive comments.Niemand0 -
