We too have two sets of weekend visitors this month. That’s a good point about not going overboard buying extra special items just for them. I tend to overcater for people/events and have been trying to scale back for the last year.

You also make me wonder if I should start putting aside money each month for a bulk buy/stock up fund so I don’t get thrown off. How much are you thinking of putting away each month?

I would be pleased if I could manage to put away £10-20/month for bulk buys. I haven't done this before so it is a bit of a guestimate.

Don't know if it helps, but I start each year with £100 in my bulk buy fund as you will see in my signature, so less than £10 a month over the year.

I then use it as/when I see things on offer that I use regularly and to bulk buy meat from a local butcher.

I find that, providing I use it carefully and add back monies saved from the GC each month, it lasts all year. Now it is slightly above £112 because that's what I had left in there at the end of the year :D

So worked out that we spent around £94.07 in January on groceries, this doesn’t include treats out. My partner also bought some bits the other day that wasn’t in the budget. Currently eating chocolates still from Christmas. Once these have gone, I’m aiming to go back to eating more fruit snacks .
  • Hi,

Please could you put me down for £475 for February please. This will be from tomorrow until the 23rd Feb, then I will have a five week challenge in 'March'.

Fingers crossed I will be under budget!

  • Please may I go for a budget of £120 for Feb? That's for the whole calendar month 1-28.

I have re-thought our grocery budget and allocated £1,560 for the year and then worked it out by day from there. This will allow me to spread the cost of bulk purchases more easily as well as giving me flexibility on the longer months.

Feb will be a challenge as we are going away, plus living between various family member's homes for 3 weeks as building work is taking place in our home. I dread to think of all the unaccompanied food shopping trips my OH will make!

Thanks lynnejk and XSpender, that is rather helpful. Now I should probably think about what qualifies as a “bulk purchase” for me vs. regular buying in quantities. Hrm, I think stocking up whenever I go to the UK qualifies as such but not necessarily when I get two bottles of olive oil from the market.

Ah, good ol’ Friday night grocery nerdin’ :)
  • In for the month . Quite over budget for the year and haven't even made it to a lidi or aldi yet.. I see the only essential needs as being milk unless i can keep myself on the herbal tea :P Might buy some yellow stickers as the cupboard stuff has long dates and no sense running it down completely and paying full price on stuff (like that would happen haha ). Ive written down everything i have ,just need to research some recipes
