:rotfl: great imagery, Siebrie!
This true though, once you get this thing working, it becomes easy - I still hate cleaning, but it's so easy now compared to the days before I decluttered.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
oceanspirit, this may or may not be the issue with your sheets but white cotton can go yellowed and a bit peculiar if stored unused for years in a warm cupboard.
If this has happened to anyone and they want to resolve the issue, a 90 degree wash and line drying will mostly resolve the problem. HTH.
Yes, it is helpful thank you. I'll have another look at them in the morning and see if I can salvage any of them.
I was thinking this evening how lovely it is to be able to actually use things that I've had in cupboards for years. It wasn't that I was saving these particular items for best, it's just that I wasn't able to access them or have the time to think about using them.
I agree with PollyWollyDoodle - whilst it will be a little while before cleaning becomes easy here, I can see that that time is coming and it's very exciting :rotfl:.Decluttering Awards: 🏅🏅0 -

And if you hang them on the line in these icy conditions it will help whiten them furtherAll that clutter used to be money0 -
Hurrah Knit Witch! Hope you are all cosy and warm now.
Another snow day (number 3), paperwork gets it today!0 -
I'd never encountered the term run and fell seam, just googled and it's that kind of seam you get on the outside of the leg of your jeans. Oww, I could see how sleeping on such a seam would colour your impressions of sides-to-middled sheets.:rotfl:
I iron the sides of the sheet carefully to make sure that the selvedges are completely flat, then split the sheet down the middle and overlap the selvedged edges by about 1.5 inches. One line of straight stitching to hold, and one line of a widely-spaced zig-zag to hold each selvedge flat. It was how Mum taught me to do it, I use a sides-to-middle sheet constantly and have never noticed the seam.
Yes, frost bleaching of white cottons, excellent idea, will really brighten them. You can also clean rugs in the snow, Scandi style.
Because I have one sheet in constant use, most of mine are stored inside pillowcases but every couple of years they have an outing and are laundered and put away, to avoid the dreaded discolouration. This can sometimes be almost tea-coloured rather than yellow, is uneven and rather unsavoury-looking. Galling when you know fine well that the sheets were put away clean.
It's often interested me to observe that very old things remain in decent condition if they are in constant use, but even unused things can decay in storage in a surprisingly short amount of time. And, of course, time is elastic, and I forget how long ago I acquired things and what you think can be a couple of years turns out to be ten or more ago!
Siebrie, I have often meant to remark on it, but not got around to it, but can I just say how much I admire your organisational skills in respect of moving clothing/ footwear in and out of service. You must save an absolute fortune compared with some other mums, and prevent much waste. Plus, the savings of time from 'shopping in the attic'. Great example to set to your children, also.:T
Have decided to get the chazzer bag out of here later (am not working the paid job today so will get some errands/ mending done) as it's irritating me. Once I've decided something's leaving, I want it gone.
Have a good day, lovely peeps. GQ xEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well thought I might get a day at home to start on the long awaited kitchen cupboards, but the heavy snow that was forecast for last night, doesn't seem to have arrived. So off to work I go. Forecast says more snow today, so if it gets too bad, I will be coming home early.
Got a few bits waiting to go to the CS, that I will drop off and hopefully get round to the cupboards Sunday or next week.

It was called a run and fell seam because it was done by hand with running stitch if you didn't have a sewing machine. (If you do it by sewing machine, it's just called a flat felled seam) But without a sewing machine it was the only way to ensure that a hand stitched seam held up to being slept onIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Thank you; that's nice to hear. It's part organisation, part luck, part being candid. I'm lucky to work in an office with rich/well-earning people, who are open to doing their bit for the environment, but unsure how to go about it. I got this job by sheer luck, as I didn't know the company at all. I'm open about being happy to use second-hand anything and detesting good things going to waste. They see me bring my simple lunch to work every day, they see me re-use the office supplies, and they see me wear the same office outfits year after year
Belgian child benefit is quite high, we get E300 (that's 268 British pounds) in total monthly for 2 dds aged 9 and 6. I think that is about how much I spend on shoes, occasional piece of clothing, and sports club throughout the year, so we make 11 months profit

I've just been out and shovelled the snow off the drive. OH is on his way home from working away, taking a day off rather than risk leaving it to a Friday night commute. We're due to get more snow later.
My tip for the day - leave your slippers on top of the radiator when you go out, plus a spare pair of gloves to put on when you get in. Your feet and hands will thank you when you get home.
