 Happy New Year, everybody!
I'm in my last few hours at the parental homestead and have done a mini-tackle of the Bedroom Cupboard of Doom in the 'rents bedroom. It had been mothered since I last sorted it out more than a year ago.
I found the large tin with the stash of unused birthday cards. Which wasn't referred to just b4 christmas when Dad had been sent out to buy a card for a rellie. I hauled a small box of Misc downstairs for maternal arbitration.
In it we found; two dusters, a stash of paperwork relating to 2007-2012 (gone for shredding), two glasses cases (one now in the donation bag to leave tomorrow, one to be swopped for a damaged case). A pair of glasses of old prescription (to go to optician tomorrow), and several other bits of misc carp too tedious to mention. One small step for personkind etc etc.
Kid Bruv is presently listing books from previous gifting seasons on amazzon and hopefully they will be rehomed. We gift pre-loved books between us and donate them or sell them afterwards, this is a family of avid readers and we can't keep all we read. I've read 124 books in 2018 and the ones which aren't from the library have to go somewhere.
Have got a donation bag (mainly books) ready to leave here tomorrow when the folks go to Big Market Town and some other bits going back to the city with me to be donated there - I use the coach and am limited as to what I can carry.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well done GQ - I spent Christmas with my mum and after dragging the decorations down from the attic (which she can't access on her own, and I have difficulty getting the ladder back up) have tried to persuade her that she has more than enough space and anything in the attic either needs to be got rid of or kept somewhere more accessible.
Mind you, I did ask her where my dad used to keep all his stuff as there isn't an empty wardrobe or chest of drawers in the house! We donated all his clothes etc shortly after he died (apart from a few jumpers and some old nightshirts that I use when I'm staying), and she's cleared out a lot of paperwork and some specialist books. Actually, she probably needs to enlist the services of GQ's little brother to shift some more of them!
Anyway, she can't get up in the attic to put the decorations away, so they're going to have to find a home somewhere more sensible! We moved a few rugs round, and I brought one home - I need to pick up the underlay and a bedside table next time I visit (but first I have to make space here... and that's part of the plan for today).0 -
Do we need a shiny new thread for 2019? I dont know how to do one otherwise I wouldSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

This one's not very big, so I think it would probably suffice for this year in terms of numbers of posts. Just depends if people want a new one for 'tidyness' sake. If so, I can happily do one later - just off out now for a walk for Day 1's activity for Red January

Happy New Year everyone.
I've started the year by having a good clean and tidy up now all the children, assorted partners, Grandchildren and friends have gone home. There are a few areas that need major attention but that will have to wait until another day, I'm having a 'me' afternoon, ie, doing nothing!0 -
Happy new year all! Have just totted up my count of all I've removed from the house this year as part of my attempt to hit 2018 items in 2018, I managed 1724 which is pretty good but still 294 short, most of it was small things cluttering up spaces and draws and also lots of paperwork that comes with doing a law degree which I have now finally been able to bin. I'm hoping I can hit a target of 2019 things in 2019 as we are planning a move this year and I want to go in to the new home with as little as possible in terms of things we don't need, we are planning to move to somewhere bigger but my hope is that if we remove loads of things we'll really notice all of the extra space rather than just having loads of things to fill the house with.Working hard to save a giant deposit for the dream house...
Then taking on a giant mortgage to buy the dream house...
To then become mortgage free!! :beer:0 -

Well I am starting the NY with a quick clear out and tidy up - just bits of things I see as I am going around putting stuff back in its place - you know 'a place for everything and everything in its place ' idea....once place is tidy again after festivities I will dive in again and do a 'deep clear out'. It makes sense to me! I like it tidy so I start to make it untidy again :rotfl: Liking the idea of 2019 things in 2019...easily achieved here I should think......will just keep a private tally.
One thing I am doing this year is I will not be buying anything!
By this I mean no new clothes except underwear as I know I need some:D If I really need some 'new' clothes then I will check out CS and Eb*y first. I dont see the need for any new shoes.
Of course stuff to 'sustain life' will be purchased and I will need to buy toothpaste and new toothbrushes. I have enough shampoo and body wash and soap to keep us going for a few months and after they are gone we are going 'plastic free' and only buying bars of soap and shampoo bars..........I havent found an alternative for toothpaste yet which I like:o
I dont need any kitchen items. My food processor of over 30 years suffered a mishap on Christmas Eve but it still works so I am not in a hurry to replace. Once the cling film has finished the beeswax wraps I have will come into their own. I have a cupboard full of cleaning stuff going to use it up and only buy refill-your-own ( shop just opened locally)
I dont need any items for the garden - fork handle may need to be replaced sometime during the year.....possibly.
I dont need anymore sports gear - lots of yoga mats and equipment, shoes, leggings etc However I am challenging myself to go back to open water swimming this year and I have bought myself a wetsuit....but this was ordered in 2018 so technically not bought in 2019 as was the new F!tbit strap...only needed a strap not a whole new watch!;)
I will get books from library, if I can, for my Book Group otherwise I will continue to source second hand and then resell or donate.
I dont need any pens, notebooks, cards and stationary in general....in fact I will have a cull:D
On the donation front .I am not making any charitable donations in the form of hard cash. Nor will I be buying any raffle tickets. Harsh?? I will donate as much unwanted items as possible to the CS I support and I will donate in kind to another charity. But money.... no!
I do intend to use up some wool and fabric in a project I have in mind. If it doesn't get off the ground then I will give it away. I intend to finish a WIP that has been one for 19 years....again if it looks as if its not going to happen then it will go without regret.
I dont make resolutions as such but I do try to make changes at this time of year. This year is the one I line up all the ducks in readiness for future plans. Its a year of preservation and care not only of the environment but of the self too. If things dont go to plan then I will not beat myself up about it but it will have an affect on what I hope to do after this year.....no pressure:eek:

I know I've quoted all of your post - but virtually all of it resonates with me
I'm planning a low-buy year of 'things' - very much mindful purchasing. In fact, mindful living, I think, will be my ethos. Very much a year of use what we've got and then consider what - if anything - is needed to replace it. I have 2 family weddings and my DD's graduation this year - I do plan to have a new dress for the last one, but am happy for a flebay bargain (my aim for wedding no 2 is to fit into a super flebay bargainous dress I have - the size is mis-labelled, so it's a size smaller than I thought (I have several other dresses from the same place and this flebay one is considerably smaller than all - hence why I think it ended up on there unworn in the first place!)I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200
