Sorry Siebrie, good that you have good memories.

Not a lot leaving here at the moment apart from sending off some little gifts to Oz, will be good to know I've actually done it in time this year!

3 bags of clothes and bits and pieces to CS.

Listing on Z!ffit ATM as 15% boost on offer. Other than Mus!c mag pie what other online book/DVD buyers are there?

Wheelie bin full for garden waste collection - I pay extra for this so I am determined the thing will be full for every collection:D

Webuybooks is one that I have had a good deal from in the past and if you search on them you can often find a code for a 10% or more boost.

Long time since I last posted but always read the thread. Love hearing how everyone is doing. It keeps me motivated.

Today I sorted through some boxes from the loft. 5 large boxes of stuff ready to go to a friend who does a lot for various charities.

These boxes will be collected next weekend which is good timing as they include a large amount of Christmas themed items for children left over from when another friend and I used to sell them at table top sales.

Still have quite a bit in the loft but no more Christmas items so the rest can wait a little while
That money talks I don't deny, I heard it once, it said "Goodbye"

Very full bag of stuff ready to go to CS - includes some Xmas bits, so will aim to drop it off today/ tomorrow. Various things listed on fb00k - some sold, some since added to CS bag :) Small fry, but I'm not sure we've really got anything substantial to get rid of now!

  • Almost had a dose of Kondo remorse, but recovered quickly!

I had thanked and said goodbye to a pair of wellies, then got invited to an event and warned wellies were recommended. Darn it, I thought. Should have kept the wellies! But then I opened the wardrobe door and spotted my winter boots, which are synthetic leather and waterproof, and I had totally forgotten they were the reason why I felt I could safely Kondo the wellies. Phew. So all is still well in my Kondo world :)

Sorry to hear that your DM is unwell :(

The Genes reunited info should still be there. I've never paid but my tree is still there after 15 years in the free account. You can export the tree from GR as a .gedcom file. I think you would be able to import this into a new software, should you buy one.

I have all my certs organised into a folder by surname, but I rely on GR for ultimate tree building and connection storage.

Maddie, sorry to hear about your DM (dear mother?) giving up her home, thats got to feel bad :(

Genealogy papers of 7 years standing ... yes. I know *exactly* how you feel, and you know I know :rotfl:
I'm probably not a good role model about storing the information. I never trusted storing it on individual sites, especially where I needed to keep a subscription going. Never trusted bought-in software, either :o

    This is my system:
    - I back everything up like crazy. My computer, my external hard drive, my google account, and a flash drive as well. I have basic trees up on Ancestry, in a free account, but I need to do more work there - thats why I joined the u3a computer genealogy group.

    - I just use Word to write a document about someone, and Excel to draw genealogical trees. I used to use the Open Office versions, but Word and Excel are so universal, they're a better bet for genealogical stuff.

    - the real organisation comes in a tree of folders. I end up with a *lot* of folders, but it suits me:
    1. top folder, Genealogy.
    2. 2nd folder, my parent's surname, eg Cat.
    3. 3rd folder, each generation within that family.
    Kitten Cat b1920 and spouse
    Grumpy Cat b1880 and spouse
    Whiskers Cat b1850 and spouse

These are all in the male line (can't afford to be matrilineal or even woman-centred about all this! That's not how the records run!).

So some families only appear in my records in the 1840s, because thats when a woman married into the Cat line.

Census records, I used to keep within that system, but now they have their own folder, so ever single census record that belongs to the Cat family goes in there - because, of course, many families have several generations living in one house, and it just got a lot simpler to have them all in one file.

It's a good question, and I don't think I have the best system, not by any means. So I'll be watching how other people reply - maybe it's time to change it up.

Thank you both for your replies. I have located log in details for GenesReunited and am pleased that I can still access all the trees shared kindly by very, very distant relatives. I will start playing around in excel and see what I can produce on there. I was pleased to find a blank A3 worksheet in my folder from when I was a member of Dorset and Somerset Family History Society so will try and get some copies made in town, so I can produce some basic stuff for DB, then when he has an idea of who belongs to who he can have a play with my GR record too. I gather I can access Ancestry at my local library free of charge, that would be a great help to try and flesh the bones so to speak:)

The service for my Uncle went alright, the guy in charge had an untuous (?) manner of speaking - which always makes my neckhair stand on end, the two loudspeakers at the front did not work, so it was hard to hear the eulogy, and the laptop had a problem playing the cd, so it was as if we were listening to a handcranked organ.... Luckily, Aunty is a bit deaf and thinks it was her hearing. In private, I have complained to the person in charge, and I will ask my parents to do the same. It is a new apartment complex for older folks, with health providers, a restaurant, pool, etc. Most is upto scratch, but the funeral part (of which they can expect many more) is not.

Anyway, I took the opportunity to drop off two ragbags and a bagful for the charity shop. I did my St. Nicolas shopping, and I bought myself a forget-me-not coloured alpaca wool sweater, and a sheep's woollen cardigan. They were not cheap, but will save on heating when I am home during the day in the next few months. The cardi will be wrapped and given to me as a St. Nic's present.

Car is full of stuff for CS and getting fuller. Old 2'6" bed is being taken apart (cardboard and fabric off and in recycling/bin along with a million staples, just need to get the wooden bit apart enough to get it out of the house) and then I should be able to sort out that bedroom...

Old radiator in the dining room being replaced for a smaller double one. The old one will be offered on Freecycle ( it's not that old - perfectly usable) if no one wants it I have a scrap man contact who uses the proceeds to fund a workshop for youngsters. Either way it will do someone some good.

  • I've been using up various creams on my feet and my body the past few days. I didn't realise I had so many of them. I want to use them up and just buy one nice scented one instead.:)

I also looked through my underwear drawer and binned two stretchy bras. One was almost grey from being black originally!:rotfl:
