Tonight we are having bacon and egg (or Begg as we call it) as there were two packs of bacon opened. We will just have it with beans and I baked a sourdough loaf yesterday so that will bulk it out.
Nice and simple - but nothing out of the freezerI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
What a shame the old thread has been lost:( So many great ideas on there too! Thank you Jackie for this new one though:T
Starting to look at my stores the same way as pieces of lego :rotfl: I lay out on the counter all the items that need using up and then work out what meal I can make. Last night we had the family round so I managed to get some reduced price luxury caramelised onion sausages and put together a cauliflower and broccoli cheese topping it with whole meal breadcrumbs from the freezer and more grated cheese that needed using up, followed by a plum oaty crumble, very filling and tasty. Now I need to start on the pulses in the larder. I thought a nice warming lentil dhal to start with? For lunch we're going to use up some leftover mash and greens - bubble and squeak with eggs and baked beans. Some people are so poor all they have is money

This reminded me of a time many years ago when my two were children and, unbeknown to me, they'd invited a couple of their pals for tea. I had a small leftover piece of roast beef that wouldn't have stretched out if I'd just sliced it so I minced it up, cooked it in the gravy with some onions, carrots, celery, pearl barley and lentils, added hm Yorks puds and cabbage. Hm apple pie and custard for afters, there was more than enough for 2 adults and 4 children.
.
Both my oh and I remember mince from the leftover beef joint, it was called royal mince in oh's family and was far superior to normal mince as less fatty. Happy memories! Some people are so poor all they have is money

My mum has been staying for a few days and she's started to get into the LFHW spirit too. Last night she used up a portion of leftover tomato and lentil soup as a sauce for a root veg casserole which she topped with potato slices and cheese and baked in the oven for us. It was lovely and there's even a portion for my tea tonight (she's going back home today). The only thing I've got in my fridge now that really needs to be used up quick smart is a wilty lettuce so I think I'll make a soup with it and some of the less wilty veg to add some flavour. I keep seeing recipes claiming that lettuce soup is lovely but I've found it pretty tasteless on its own.0

If I've got any cauli left over I freeze it and if it's not good enough to serve with a dinner, I mash it and add to mashed potato for a pie topping.
Good way to up your 5-a-day.
Such a good idea, thank you! :TSome people are so poor all they have is money

I'm making us a pasta bake for supper tonight and I've used up another 3 rashers of my cooking bacon, half a carrot left over from the sweet and sour pork I made a couple of days ago, half a red onion ditto, some floppy celery, some home made cider and the tail end of a tube of tomato puree that needed using along with some garlic and onion granules and a good grind of black pepper. Chuck in some Italian herbs and a tomato and herb stock cube and it smells delicious. The only thing I had to start new was a red pepper which I chopped a quarter of to give it all some colour. Food for cold days and cold houses!!!0

Does anyone not meal plan? I don't sit down each week and write out what I'm having, I have tried and it just doesn't work for me. I do however batch cook so i have some quick meals to grab after work and check my cupboards before shopping planning meals based on what I have in
I suppose it's still meal planning in a fashion!Sealed pot challenge 1960 -

Tara747,
One of the great mysteries of the modern world - disappearing threads
Chicken, bacon & mushroom pie, with the last of the leek & more veg from the freezer. Another meal for tomorrow but with plain mash. Made enough extra filling for a 2 person portion to go into freezer - I know I am supposed to be emptying my freezer but more is still coming out than going in!
Now I have some puff pastry to finish, plus a tomato, some streaky bacon, shallots, soft cheese that is almost ood. I do have eggs as well - so maybe some sort of quiche BUT I must NOT call it a quiche as my DH really does not like quiches
