  • Wow, that's a tough one. You might as well ask me which is my favourite child! ;) I think for me it would have to be basil or oregano, nutmeg or cinnamon and chilli powder or flakes.

these are on my list :j

had a lazy tea - used a free pizza voucher at asdas and got nothing else. bit annoyed as the pizza i wanted in the range was 3.50 against 1.50 for all the rest. gluten free but  more than double price. voucher would only have covered up to £2.50 so glad I'm not gluten free as such i just get a sore tummy with carb heavy products . Was super good and didn't buy anything else either :)

There's a veggie curry in Nigella's "How to Eat" which includes turnips. I'm not keen on them either-probably the only vegetable I don't like-but they might be alright in a curry

I'm glad the turnips will last a few weeks Yorkslass... I think I'll be sneaking them into things gradually.

are they similar to a radish when eaten raw? I guess they're the same family now I come to think of it.

Yes, very similar to radishes but a little more "woody" in texture so slice thinner if that might put you off.
  • I definitely could never not have cinnamon or nutmeg in the cupboard ,plus tumeric, or at a push any curry powder ,and of course chilli powder and a bottle of Lazy Garlic and my house is never without black pepper or in fact any pepper

I think I am the sort of person that just adores herbs and spices and I have a great collection in my cupboard which all get used and replaced.

I found a farm shop that does them without the fancy packaging for a fraction of those silly Swarzt ones.I have a collection of tiny lock'n'lock boxes that I have built up over the years, and store them in there. Airtight and not clear glass so they neither dry out nor discolour I keep them in the cupboard in the dark anyway.

  • Someone - I can't remember who, sorry - a few posts back mentioned Aduki Beans and what they can be used for.
They make a delicious vegetarian shepherds pie!!! I even got my carnivorous DH to agree and ask for it again!

can anyone give me some ideas to use up three quite large turnips?

Not something I would usually buy but I got a veg box delivered this week.

The only time I've cooked them I've mashed them but one of my daughters really dislikes mash.

    Pasties!

Use carrots, turnip, onion and potato. Cook until soft add black pepper and herbs and spices and some cheese if you want. Make some pastry, roll out and cut around a small plate. Add the filling to half of the pastry round, fold over the top and then create the rolled edge. Cook for 20 mins at 200. You can also freeze them uncooked.

Hugh F-W has a recipe for Potato Dauphinoise where he swaps half of the spuds for turnips.

Ooh that was me, thank you, that sounds interesting, maybe I'll mix them with mince though, not sure obligate carnivore hubby would go for it otherwise, lol.

How on earth do you dip a Ryvita in a cup of tea? Surely, they are too wide. :)
