  • Evening chums I am very chuffed as I got my shopping today for a touch over a tenner so this months food shopping has been an amazing £29.22 all told .mind you it helped that I came home from Dds with lots of left over bits and bobs from the Christmas shopping that she decided her family had had enough of:0 I never look a gift horse in the mouth and eating xmas food in january to me is fine :) I stocked up this morning with lots of veg and fruit and a few essentials so from my normal monthly budget of £60.00 I have only spent £29.22 :):):) happy days .I don't need to shop anymore this month and february will only be a 28 day month so with luck I should have left over cash at the end of february as well Out of 28 days next month I am out for 12 of them in the evening so only 16 dinners to sort out:) If I use up some more of my freezer stuff apart from fresh F&V hopefully I should be able to stash some more away towards my holiday. I am determined to get the freezer down enough for me to defrost it. Once I have only about two bagfuls left I can bung it into DDs second box freezer while I defrost it.

Celery soup was made this morning for the next few days lunch, and tomorrow I shall be making another rice pudding for a few afters next week.I found a box of semolina in the cupboard so I may make a milk pudding with that as well during the week.

Hope everyone has a good weekend Its great when you can magic something out of very little My sardine stash will get a bit used next week as well I have a recipe somewhere for sardine pate which will be nice on the crackers with some sliced tomato

    Cheers chums

Hello JackieO! We are still eating Xmas leftovers! Just finished the cake - lunchtime treat with cheese. The very last bits of spiced beef got made into hash. so it's now chocolates and biscuits left. I am actually quite good with chocolates - one a day after dinner, so always make them last.

Although we are not at all Scottish, we do usually cook a haggis for Burns night as we enjoy it. And we enjoy the clapshot I shall make for breakfast today - the leftover mashed potato & haggis, mixed with an egg and fried in dollops. Takes us back to walking the West Highland Way where it was standard breakfast fare!

Dd gave me some more plums as they came in her box and she is allergic to them sadly:( so another crumble.

Hi Hev, I’m allergic to fresh fruit, too, but I can eat it once it’s processed. Your dd can probably enjoy the crumble :) I have something called a cross allergy, which is like ‘hayfever level 2’. I no longer get the sniffles and the itchings, but cannot eat apples, pears, cherries, plums, peaches, cherry tomatoes, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, and a few more. Especially fresh apples burns like chillies in my mouth, but I can drink factory apple juice and hm applesauce.

Hi Siebrie! It's horrible isn't it? Mostly my dd can eat fruit once it is cooked or processed as it breaks down the proteins (she has Oral allergy syndrome apparently:() This time though she ate some plums cooked in a crumble and had a reaction so best avoided we feel. She actually had a reaction to jelly beans as they use real fruit juice to flavour them. She can have pasteurised apple juice but not pressed. She reacts to cherries, apples, pears, plums and peaches so far but was told it could get worse and more could become an issue. She has an epi pen as her throat started to close after cherries (her favourite fruit :( ) but normally a piriton is enough. She still gets a fruit and veg box for her family though and has the veg with no problems so far. If there is anything she cant use we help out though ;) dd is going to phone the company and let them know to substitute the problem fruit where they can.
Some people are so poor all they have is money ;)

  • Hi everyone,

Didn’t post yesterday so am playing catch up.

Sat 27th: Lunch hm Plum Bread, butter & cheddar. Dinner was herby breaded veal, boiled potatoes & petit pois

Sun 28th: Lunch - DH cheese sandwich, me hm Plum Bread & butter. Dinner Venison sausages (from freezer), mash made with soured cream (pot has one more portion left) and “drumroll please” used the pickled red cabbage (from fridge & glass jar washed & recycled already) - :T JackieO:T. It was an absolutely delicious combination of foods.

From Friday’s post I only managed 2 days menu planning so I have to put my thinking cap on. The freezer is emptying nicely except for the large bag of petit pois added yesterday!

:T again JackieO - we were both so impressed that I will probably invest in another jar of pickled red cabbage:rotfl:

Tomorrow I think I need to do some baking - use up cupboard stores.

I made Jack Monroe's hummus recipe yesterday, and I have to say that it's not very nice. Maybe because I used a tin of A1di chickpeas, even though I rinsed them well. As I followed the recipe I did wonder about the amount of lemon juice, and I was right, it's far too sour now. I tried to save it by adding the suggested teaspoon of peanut butter, and that helped a little bit, but not enough. I have now added salt and pepper, which again helps a bit, but not enough. It's edible, and I've brought it to work for lunch, but it's not enjoyable. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Jack's ingredients are: boiled chickpeas, lemon juice and lemon zest, oil, garlic, paprika powder.

  • Add in some powdered cumin and coriander when you're blitzing the chick peas and if you have it some fresh coriander leaf, it 'lifts' the whole flavour of the finished Hummus. Hope that helps? x.

My go to hummus recipe is Delia's
  • You could try adding a bit of sweet chili sauce if you have any as I think the sugar in that will help offset the lemon juice. It'll make it favoured hummus rather than plain but it might taste better. :-)
  • Hi everyone,

My DH loves houmous, but I can take it or leave it:) maybe I could give it a go:undecided. Delia’s recipe:question:

Tonight’s dinner was Ha..y Bi..rs Sausage Casserole - used the last 8 Pork Sausages & the chorizo cocktail sausages from the freezer, the last venison sausage from last night’s dinner + lightly fried, in butter, the lo boiled potatoes from Saturday’s dinner. It was absolutely delicious:T
The freezer now has a bag of mackerel fillets, a tiny joint of beef, mini scallops, loads of vegetables & lots of herbs. So tomorrow night Sausage Casserole with boiled rice - rest to be frozen. Then need to use the fish & later in the week I will do a roast dinner using up the last 2 Yorkshire Puds from the freezer.
Saturday we are at my uncle’s for lunch & I will be taking a Focaccia & some choc chip biccies.
We will be WELL fed (my cousin is a great cook) + we get to see the new baby in the family (10lbs 13oz when he was born:eek:)
