A few years ago I almost sparked a riot. DH had gone to the pub for a drink and raved about how I was cooking him a pea and ham soup. Seemingly lots of the other guys there went on about how their Mum or Gran used to make that and they had not had that for years and then went home and asked their wives how come they did not cook that. I got dirty looks for days!!!!!!!
I was chatting to older dd and sil the other day who piped up how he remembered when they drove up to visit I had home made bread or rolls and soup for them. I did not feel it was appropriate to point out it was very economical and just said it meant nothing would spoil if they were delayed.
It is almost scary how some of the cheaper things to cook like pizza. bread , quiche, soup or a pie seem to really impress."You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

It was a DOD day yesterday (Day Off Diet), as had a group lunch out. Well - that was one plus/one minus.
The minus was that it struck me there were some rather odd ingredients in the quiche - and I realised they had obviously thought "What shall we do with these leftovers?" and that had been their answer. Will steer clear of quiche there in future - in case of rather unexpected ingredients. It hadn't really struck me that there are restaurants/cafes that will use up leftovers (even though we do it in the home).
The plus - though I can't see me having it that often (calories) is I decided to try a fancy coffee?/pudding? I'd not tried before. This being (real) coffee poured over vanilla icecream. Now that was quite nice and would be easy to duplicate if wanted.
Back on the diet today - and a second helping of dancing for the week.0 -
Ooh, Caronc I envy your real fire, nothing beats curling up in front of one when it's cold. Though I don't envy you the emptying the ashes and remaking! We had a coal fire when I first got married, and that was a dreaded job!!
I'm working all day, and have woke up tired ,I didn't sleep well .My mind was too active when I got home from the quiz, and I was up and down to the loo a few times!
So I can't be bothered making a sandwich ,so I'm taking a tin of soup tomato,for lunch with 2 toast,and a yogurt.
I'm off for the weekend after today though ,so roll on 6pm!!!Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
UP early, in the dark, my mind was busy shopping while I was in bed:(
I finished up with just a chicken & stuffing sarnie for dinner last night, later a bowl of L's cheapo muesli, which was OK
Thanks for thoughts on the HM chicken soup, I think you're right. I may freeze the rest until I get another carcass, or may just cut my loss, bin it & mark it down to experience
Caron, will you be having a soup & stove warming party? We'll be round later:)
Not yet tried the frozen mash, I forgot about it and it was too late to start nuking by then:o:
Off into town soon, like PN, getting "bits" in, hence shopping when I should've been sleeping this morning. I need to get to Marks food hall, just to buy gift vouchers, but the dine in meal is on offer so may get something if OK for putting by
Later this afternoon I've got to pop over to the Farmer's Market and collect the meat I ordered, I'll leave it a bit, there was a crash earlier & now two hour delays on motorway, should be cleared by time i get round to it
Lunch, another fried egg sarnie I think
Dinner, no idea, maybe spot a YS while I'm outNovice_investor101 wrote: »I have recently turned the CH temp down to 70c to make the boiler more efficient, & that hasn't bothered me most evenings - I've been warm enough with my jumper on & a blanket on the couch. Thermostat still set the same anyway. I must just have a "chill".
.
Blimey, I turn mine up to 70c. But I tend not to feel the cold, probably due to hard upbringing like most of my generation, icicles & frost flowers on the inside of the windows, was the norm when I were a lad:DEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I don't remember last year feeling chilly in bed with just a t-shirt on but I did used to have the boiler temp set to about 80c, which meant it never condensed....
Once I'd figured that out I turned it down to about 75c (eco setting on boiler) - I noticed the difference at first but got used to it. This winter I've dropped it again to 70c & have the thermostat set for the rooms to be at 18c instead of 20c, which is fine in the current mildish weather. If there's a real cold spell, I'll be turning everything up to max!
Anyway, I was fine in bed last night in some light PJ's. The heating is effectively off (thermostat turned down to 14c) as I'm out all day til 9pm & it's still over 16c in the house.0 -
I got 8 tortilla wraps out of the freezer last night and I've had two so we have to use up the rest today.
I might have a couple with vegan cream cheese and some roasted veggies before I go out. I have my mental health thing today that I missed a couple of times because I was ill so I have to go to that today.:)It sounds like you are definitely recovering Wednesday a return of appetite is a good signyou can keep the trampoline, I tried it once and there is a very embarrassing video somewhere of me on it  I threatened violence at the time should it ever appear anywhere online :rotfl:
:DMy trampoline is only one of the mini ones that you keep indoors. My garden is very overlooked so I don't fancy the neighbours seeing me bounce up and down out there.:rotfl:0 -
Should I feel smug or downright mean that my heating is set to 19C (= 66.2F)? I have lots of warm cardis...0

I'm starving. No reason for it, it must be piggery.
I didn't get out early and go for any of that shopping... really CBA.
Got a sheet of paper and a pencil on the worktop in the kitchen now, handy to jot down things I randomly think of. Trouble is, usually, I think of food I need, or realise I need something, when I'm in the kitchen prepping food .... but any list is scribbled on a bit of paper in the living room .... so the unusual things I want to look out for/get would easily be forgotten between the two rooms.
There's no room to have a piece of paper/pencil out in the kitchen most of the time as it looks untidy .... which is why I don't do it except about once a year when I want to make some kind of mega/Xmas ideas list... so the list contains things I need, things I think I want - and things I might want....
e.g. a swiss roll might go on that list as "things I might want", perchance to make a trifle... but the reality is I usually just knock up a quick chocolate cake from scratch for those.... but getting a simple swiss roll is often on the list of "could do that"....
e.g. jar of little cherries... could've come in handy to make a pineapple pudding to put in the circle... could come in handy for snowballs IF I buy advocaat and IF I buy cocktail sticks.
So a list of "things I'll probably never buy, but don't want to forget about in case I do go for it".0 -
Christmas all thought about/presents bought/all cards due to go by post posted.
Leaving one question - do I get in a bottle of champagne/owt special to eat?0
