Cooking for one (Mark Three)

Brambling - I'm thinking if it's still hot tomorrow I might steam the beetroot. It's a rainbow bunch and I'll wrap them seperately in foil so they don't bleed. I've done that before and it's worked just fine:)0

Thanks Caron I haven't though of steaming them, I just remember my mum boiling them I think she used to leave the tops on as she said it stopped them bleeding so much. These are golden ones (I think
) they were YS so cheaper than the usual ones

If they are all the same colour they'll be fine in together, I prefer steaming to boiling as I think it leaves a firmer flesh, I do leave the tops and tails on. You can slow cook them but I've never tried that, can't see why it wouldn't work though:)0

reminds me, I also have a beetroot to cook. I learnt when young, to always twist the leaves off and then to cook with tops and tails on. I always do that, leave them whole and pressure cook them on a trivet over 1/4 pint of water. Takes 15-20 minutes.
I took a can of beans out to remind me to have beans on toast for breakfast, didn`t fancy that so had the semolina toast with a thin slice of cheddar melting on each, that was nice. I am gearing up for a `making` afternoon after AnC arrives. Already measured out ingredients for granola and will make scones and vanilla ice cream but only the custard stage today and freezing/churning tomorrow. I leave frozen bread out exposed all night, dries it out a bit and makes better toast
I want something out the freezer today for lunch, turkey I think and cooked veg with warm beetroot and rhubarb crumble and yoghurt afterwards. I want oats at some time so will soak later, to eat at 4.30.
Plants are loving the wet weather although early blight will likely strike. Its worth the wet to get the flaming june this year, should start around the 8th, kind of missing out spring in some areas but plants will catch up0 -
lol, sounds like holding the nose and taking the medicine when I was a child
I found a recipe for a bread with oats, need oats but get fed up of oats. Sounds nice, won`t be making a plait as that is for show, just a bread tin, easy to slice. This afternoon when oven is on, I will get ingredients ready this morning, so I don`t go into cba mode this afternoon. I use instant yeast so can miss that bubbling stage and no egg wash etc

Think I'll have a go today at "polenta pizza" ( a recipe by that Exceedingly Vegan blogger). So it's things like tomatoes/mushrooms/flaked almonds on a polenta base.
Might deserve a glass of wine with it - excuse this time being I think I might have finally found "my" hairdresser here (that'll be my 3rd swop of hairdresser since moving - to try to find a "city" one here and I think they might be) and I've had to be a little devious (not my normal way of operating:cool:) to manage to nab them as mine (as they're not taking on new customers).
Right - summer out there again today and time for a bit more weeding - whilst I hang around waiting for several deliveries at once.0 -
Good morning everyone,
The beetroot has been scrubbed, wrapped in foil and is now steaming away:).
No toast for me this morning as my bread had gone mouldy:o so I had crackers with a thin slice of gouda and some fruit juice instead.
I've hard boiled an egg and will have that in a piece of baguette with cress, lettuce and cucumber for lunch. I'm not sure about tonight, I cooked extra spuds last night so will use those and have them with steamed veg plus a protein element. Not terribly exciting but I cba cooking much in the warm weather.
Today is meant to be the last dry day until the weekend so I hope to get some more done outside. I'm not feeling very steady so far this morning so won't be attempting anything too bendy!0 -

To make mac cheese I'd need: flour, milk, margarine, cheese. I've always got all those, except the milk. I COULD buy a carton of dried milk, but when I've looked it's not for sale, it's hard to find these days unless you shop where it's sold and remember to look. I COULD freeze milk, but I don't for two reasons: 1/I have a small freezer 2/it grosses me out thinking of defrosted milk.
So, if it's winter and if I have milk in the house to use up ... and if I remember mac cheese, then I'll make one. Else, if I randomly spot a RM mac cheese for £1 or less when I fancy one then I'll have that. I probably eat 3 a year, so it's never sufficient quantities or frequency to justify making it and freezing it.
This is so me, i don’t drink milk or have it with cereal so it has to be bought specially so mac cheese, for all i enjoy it, doesn’t happen very often, same with lasagne! :j0 -
Last night i was uber organised, i roasted a chicken, whilst the swede was singing in the microwave :T , made rhubarb compote with the wonky rhubarb from morrisons and baked some potatoes.
Tonight i am having all that again with a Yorkshire pud and broccoli, tomorrows lunch will involve coronation chicken and il put up a plate of leftovers for tomorrows dinner after spin. Any left over chicken tonight, a: will be given to the dog (aww) and b: frozen.
Friday night its ratatouille with whatever veg i have left which will make enough to carry over into the weekend – i love it when i am organised. :A :drool:0
