is the 6k in your account also your emergency fund/im going to use it as my EF

it's my main account, all DD and SO are there
anything I manage to save above the 7k at the beginning of the month I put it in the ISA, given that in the c/a you get 4% only on the first 7k, everything above it gets 0,1% only
by the end of the month the balance has gone down to 6k, always available for emergencies

I've just read the article about which bank account is best, but it doesn't seem to cover someone like me. I drift in and out of my overdraft every month, but I only take home about £700/750 a month so the accounts recommended for those who use their overdraft are useless.

I'm currently with Bank of Scotland and resent their recent changes to the overdraft charging and credit interest structure. I really don't want to leave as I've been with them since I was 16, but to be honest they've been getting worse and worse for years now.

    Any suggestions anyone?

Some advice would be great. I'm after a new current account for my wife to pay in the monthly housekeeping. She already has a NAtwest current and savings account but the account is overdrawn and she likes to dip into the overdraft.

I'm after a accoutn which has no overdraft so either the cash machine refuses to give money or the card gets declined in the shop if there are no funds in there.

Ob I like to pick up any Quidco or signing on incentives that are available so any recommendations would be great.

Looking to pay in £450 a month (Could go to £500)

    Thanks.

All these "Deposit £1000 monthly at 4% and receive a £100 bonus" annoy me - what about a "deposit £10,000 lump sum / leave it for 12 months and receive a £100 bonus"
Obviously the banks are hoping that people will miss a deposit in one month - and will then have the excuse to reduce the interest rate to 0.000001%....

I am looking at the Halifax Reward Current account that offers £50 for opening an account (http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/rcamsm100601.asp?source=NETMONSUREWCAINCETIV)
Does this need to be a sole account - or can I use it alongside a Nationwide account - The account will be used as a "day to day" spending account

I've just received a letter from RBS asking me to read the enclosed leaflet 'Changes to Terms and Conditions' - which seems basically to say that all their current accounts have stopped paying interest. My 'Interest Paying Current Account' is to be renamed 'Current Account'. This is no big deal, since I kept a very small amount in it, and got paid the princely sum of £2.99 in the last year, but it really makes me cross.

I could of course switch accounts, but since I don't earn a salary, and don't go into overdraft, I can't at a glance find a better deal, nor am I sure I can be bothered to go through what may be the painful process of switching (according to many correspondents here). Presently I have a joint account and a savings account with RBS and it is convenient to have them all under one umbrella.

All I ask is a bank that provides a decent, consistent service with minimal return for the privilege of holding my account. ....

Nope, they're looking for a regular income.

    Bread and butter...

"You will need to transfer any credits, such as your salary or pension, into your new account".

Then you need to pay in £1000 per month if you want the £5/month reward.

There's nothing to stop you keeping the NW account open as well, but you'd have to transfer your wage to HX. Then again, there's no need to have your wage paid into NW, so feel free to move your wage to Hx and set up a standing order from Halifax to NW.

In a few months, NW might repeat their "move your current account to us for £xx offer" - at which point, you can do so, get £xx and set up standing orders to and from Hx for £1000/month to continue getting your free fivers :T

  • My wife and I are currently with FD but my wife has a business account with Santander. Does anyone know if we'd be able to switch from FD to the Santander 5% current account?

    Thanks.

    I have no idea.
But given our experience of the two companies, it would take more than 5% interest to get me to switch from FD to Santander!
