True it could be anything, surely Hotchilli will send openreach to look at the problem which is £96 looking at this webpage

yes you could go for mobile broadband but you need to research the connection speed and the deals and a few years ago I had a three mifi box with 5mb speeds and 15 gigs data for £15 monthly

    They've quoted me £175+VAT which I assume is £210.

Just some advice from someone who's recently moved from a fixed line service delivering 1Mbps to a 4.5G LTE service delivering far higher speeds - please note I'm Hong Kong based, but same issues apply.

First, make sure you have a decent 4.5G equipped router, that's one with a built in Sim tray - try Huawei for these home bases & don't pay crazy prices - you can purchase outright cheaply on eBay.

Secondly, ensure you are actually able to get a decent signal, this varies across the UK, but even in weak spots, the addition of an external arial helps greatly.

Thirdly, make sure you have a decent AC Wifi router, ones push the numbers 3200 or 5100 are great for coverage and pushing signals through brick/concrete walls.

My 'unlimited' service in HK has cost me approx. £600 for two years, included in this cost was a Sim Equipped 4.5G Router & high end Wifi AC Router.

Whilst my service is now considerably better than anything 'fixed line', we still have an irregular service, this is due to demand constraints on bandwidth available - our 4.5G service being via microwave connections - I live on a small Island, and, more importantly, prevailing weather conditions - in heavy rain we get no service I'm afraid & its rains quite a lot in HK. On the plus side, in 5 months I've managed to burn through more than 2Tb of data, much of this due to using an Xbox and DLing digital games. On average, my speed has been 12Mbps down and 5Mbps up, I say on average because I can get speeds up to 52Mbps down, alas its not 24/7!

I don't know if my neighbours have the same problems. I'm with Hotchilli. My router is about 10 years old.

It is almost certainly worth getting a newer router - they're less than 50 quid for a decent one and a ready to go spare is always handy if your main router dies for some reason. It is possible that Hotchilli have dropped support for a protocol that your router was using so it has dropped back to a slower protocol.
