You will be tied to BT for line rental for 12 months (which, despite what others might say, I still regard as the best option) so, for voice telephony, you'll be looking to CPS your calls.

    Heinz.

Its actually a 18 month contract on the half price connection offer, plus you must make 10 calls a month via BT.;)

    See: http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/history/09-11-2007/FrameworkImpl10126/FrameworkImpl133605.htm#FrameworkImpl133605
  • Apparently you have to pay the full connection price, and they give you a credit of £62.50 p on your first bill.
  • I currently live in a house without a BT line. We got blueyonder (now virgin) to install us telephone and broadband as it was the cheapest option at the time, they were doing free installation. They keep putting the price up now thought, I was paying £16.99 for 2mb broadband and free phone calls at the weekend, now i'm on the two for £20. So I was thinking of moving to talk talk who are now only charging £16.39 and I reckon I'll get the full 8 meg as I live near the exchange. But how does this half price line rental offer from BT affect the switch to talk talk? Will this hinder me changing to Talk Talk because of the min 10 calls/month I will have to make with BT?

I'm a bit confused on how to do the switch.
  • If you do the switch to BT you wil have a 12 month contract if you pay the full connection, 18 month if you take the half price one. This wil stop you leaving to Talk Talk unless:

    1) on the 12 month contract you pay £70
    2) on the 18 month you pay the £70 and the other half of the connection charge.

If you want Talk Talk ask them to install the line for you..but they will most probably LIE to you and claim they cant.

  • Ok, I called Talk Talk, they said that they don't install the lines, I need to get BT to do that and then call them within 14 day of being connected because I can cancel the BT contract within that period and get switched over to Talk Talk. Does this sound right to you Drunkstar? If I ask for the half price line installation from BT do you think they will ask for the other half of the install price if ic cancel?

    No!

    It's lies, lies, lies.

Talk Talk (like any of the other "line providers'' now in the market) can install lines (i.e. pay Openreach to do so). They decline to do so though (and give people that BS you've received) because they don't want to pay the approximately £103.40 it would cost them - preferring to pay £2.35 to take over a working BT line after having conned the punter into paying BT for the installation themselves).

If you get BT to do it, it's likely to cost you £124.99 and you will have to agree to at least a 12 month contract (the half price instrallation will be an 18 month contract). If you breach the contract in accordance with Talk Talk's 'advice', you'll be liable to pay the remainder of the contract or £70 (whichever is less) in the case of a 12 month contract or, AIUI, ALL the remaining monthly fees in the case of the 18 month contract.

In other words, you will have paid at least £194.99 so you can get the Talk Talk 'service'.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Well thats no use at all either way then :o( Thanks for your advice though.

Does anyone know any ways to twist Talk Talks arm so as I can get this line installed through them? Its so painfully expensive just to get a line plumbed in!

Talk Talk has been running a pilot scheme that will allow a Talk Talk customer to order the new line via Talk Talk and avoid having to sign a contract with BT. The scheme has apparently been piloted with several hundred customers but for reasons best known to themselves will not roll it out properly until 2008.. given that Openreach have offered the option to them since April 2006

You could see if you could get on that - but do you really want to join a company which gives you misleading information in the hope you will sign up with them?

    Regards
    Sunil
  • Does anyone know if you can approach open reach directly to install a new phone line so the customer then has a free choice of company to be billed with (rather than be tied into an 18mth contract)?
