More Charity Shop Bargains for 2018 & beyond!

Only one charity shop open local to me, (BHF), called in a couple of times but managed to talk myself out of any purchases. My favourite community charity shop re-opened this week but it means getting the bus home and I'm not feeling very positive about using public transport at the mo. I did make a special effort and walked there and back yesterday, (10.500 steps!), but I was cream crackered when I got home. Was tempted by some b/n large white church candles at 50p each and scarves at 50p but I seem to have lost my buying mojo these days. Good to see the shop open tho.
Have been putting a few items on Freegle recently. Initially had a good experience getting rid of a bread maker so listed a few more things but have been messed about and let down by people since then. What is wrong with people
!!!! Gonna wait now til the charity shops are all up and running properly again and will donate as usual. 8 -

I will be sticking mine on Freecycle.Potternerd said:Am loving being back in the charity shops. Not all are open but some of my favourites are. I haven’t bought anything yet but I have been tempted.Could anyone suggest anywhere i could donate ring binders and files? I donated some clothes and books to the hospice shop today but they didn’t want the files.
Do people come and collect things like that? I have a loft full.

I've rehomed four boxes of ringbinders by phoning a school. Start with those close to you but also look at ones that might have a member of staff & a car handy? Made a dash for chazzers in the opposite direction this lunchtime and found 4 out of 5 of them open
. Came away with six books and some BN boxed lights as pictured (usually retailing for £20) for a grand total of £4:
WFH means less time wasted commuting and less downtime but for the first time in my life I am making sure I take a proper break at lunch! No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Age UK Colne was open, sanitised my hands at the door & steered me onto the one way system. Yet they had no Denby. Colne market had a stall with a discounted Denby Castile casserole - no lid but handsome - I may use it as a fruit bowl or something. It was good to be back on the hunt!4

I love adding to my kitchenware but items tend to be heavy and bulky. Where do you store all your Denby?DigForVictory said:Age UK Colne was open, sanitised my hands at the door & steered me onto the one way system. Yet they had no Denby. I think on the repair shop thay mended a childs rocking chair in cane.Miró said:
May I add my recent Freecycle find? A lovely gentleman advertised an antique hall chair in mahogany with a cane back and upholstered seat in its original condition. He even delivered it whilst observing all the r & r's re distancing etc. I isolated it for a few days and then gave it the once over. There is one tiny break in the caning, the tapestry fabric was very, very dusty, the braiding had disintegrated in places and the studs were a little rusty. The webbing underneath was sound and the seat pad still had sufficient 'bounce'. So, I stripped off the braiding and studs and gave the seat a gentle clean. Good old Boyes department store's craft section in Northallerton came up with new braid and studs. I thoroughly enjoyed my little project but am left with a niggling dilemma. The break in the caning is very slight but now my eye is constantly drawn to it. I've thought about upholstering the back instead, looking into teaching myself caning to completely redo the back or attempting a repair of just the small section, just propping a cushion in front of the break or submitting the blooming' chair to 'The Repair Shop' - (love that telly prog) tho I suspect I don't have a sufficiently heart rending sob story to go with the chair for them!!!Living_proof said:Not a charity shop bargain, but a Freecycle one, which is so exciting I have to mention it! .................. Really chuffed with my totally free bargain!
Woo hoo, visited my first chazza shop in 3 months this afty
. BHF it was and the only one that has opened round here so far. The shop only had about half the usual amount of stock with a big wide space down the middle and we were given strict instructions to use sanitiser on the way in. Prices did seem to have increased quite a bit. I pulled a dress out of the rail to look at it and got the distinctly frosty impression it was an 'only touch if ya gonna buy' situation. The only item of any real interest was a Radley black leather handbag but £19.95 for a used bag seemed a bit steep to me.
thye specifically mentioned thta they were using off the roll prewoven cane.
you cut it roughlt to size, soak to soften then pin and trim. Means you dont need to go on a whole course!Norn Iron Club member 4734 -
I think I remember seeing that! Have looked into the prewoven cane stuff but bearing in mind the cost of the cane sheet/staple gun purchase/mahogany stain/edging trim I think I will live with it as is for the time being. I'm quite liking the authenticity/shabby chicness at the mo but might have a go at a proper refurb at a later date. Thanks for the reminder about getting the prewoven cane thoArtytarty said:

Miro - that is a nice chair. As long as you are not at risk of being snagged by the cane it might be best to leave as is rather than risk ruining it. My enthusiasm has ruined things in the past.

Not a charity shop buy but an ebay one. I got a gorgeous Laura Ashley wing back chair, it has little legs and castors, beautifully upholstered in cream fabric, just needed a good clean. I steamed it first to loosen any marks etc, then I cleaned it all over with upholstery cleaner and warm water then ran the steamer over it again, I paid £70 for it and it looks fab.
