Lucy - my condolences too. :grouphug:

    - welcome to the thread.
You have some nice brands in your bargains.
I keep my eye open for Seasalt, Joules, White Stuff, Fat Face & Boden.
Mantaray has dropped off my radar somewhat.

Lucy - very sorry to hear your news.

Laredouter - you have good brands there that should last a long time.

I have three main charity shop towns I visit; Guildford (my university town), and Wickford and Basildon (Essex). The 5 charity shops in Guildford are full of really nice and smart brands with horrifying prices to match, while the Essex charity shops are mainly filled with supermarket tat at prices which are almost RRP.
I'd be interested in hearing about any good finds in Wickford, can divert there.

But I have a very strong aversion to Basildon, I wouldn't go there if you paid me! I don't mind Pitsea, Canvey and the surrounds, but Basildon itself is up there with Romford, a total no-go.

Laredouter - dont think you can wash your cashmere at the launderette! I'm sure Miro would have sage advice. I just wouldn't want you to end up with a felted dolly jumper!!
I'd also wash everything on the lowest temp, shortest programme just in case

NOOOOOOOO!!! No washy cashmere, (or cashmere blends) at the launderette or in a washer despite what the label may say. On the advice of an M & S assistant I put a pure cashmere sweater, bought in the M & S sale at a really silly price, in the washer at the recommended settings. Went in at a size 14 - came out a size -00000. Disaster!

To Lucy, so sorry to hear your sad news.....
  • Basildon has gone downhill so much recently, so I honestly don't blame you VfM4meplse. Most of the shops in Wickford aren't really worth looking in but there are sometimes some nice things in the Sue Ryder shop and Banardo's.

Thanks for your advice Mir! and Silva Sava; I decided to keep the wool and cashmere jumpers out of the wash, though the other two washed nicely. I guess I'll try the freezer trick when I go home this weekend (I think my flatmates would think I am really weird if they found my jumpers in the communal freezer :rotfl:).

I've washed cashmere jumpers and cardigans on my wool cycle lots of times and they came out just fine.
I use a special 'handwash for delicates' liquid which can also be used in the machine.
I put each garment in one of those padded zip-up bags.

They wouldn't go within a mile of a launderette though.

Latest bargain is a pair of black-watch leggings, £1.00 from Sue Ryder shop.

A journey from hell to Otley by bus this afty.:( Our normally very civilised group of passengers was overtaken by a bunch of loud music playing, shouty, feet-on-seat types and then a group of 20 or so walkers got on - all with huge rucsacs and a bit too much bonhomie - all of which completely shattered the usually peaceful journey through lovely Wharfedale. (I think I have become a grumpy old woman!) Anyhoo, two finds in the 99p shop....a Dash, navy and white, floaty/smocky top which looks nice and fresh and will be useful holiday wear. Also, a Gallery (Dunnes), navy, short sleeved top with an unusual pleat-ey effect BNWT and very nice fabric. Stopped off at the community chazza on the way back and picked up a couple of travel guides (25p each) for places I might be visiting this year.

Miro (who is not to be trusted with cashmere! :o) :D
  • I am a charity shop virgin. However willing to see what it's like

One question is how do people generally find the quality of clothing from the shops? do they hold up well?
