I agree with LaPlan - you don’t need to pay all of it. But as she says, check what Martin says!

Credit cards refunds and chargeback – MSE (moneysavingexpert.com)

Section 75 can be used in most cases where you've paid using credit, and the product or service you bought must have cost more than £100, and less than £30,000. You're covered even if you only pay a deposit on your credit card, and pay the balance by other means.

Section 75 refunds: credit card protection’ - MSE (moneysavingexpert.com)

Section 75 means that if you pay for something costing over £100 and less than £30,000 on credit, the lender's equally liable (along with the retailer) if something goes wrong.

This isn't the credit provider being nice. It's a legal protection put in place so that you're never in the position of paying off debt for something you either didn't receive, or wasn't as it should've been. Whether it's a flight, kitchen, computer, or anything else, pay on a credit card, store card or with store instalment credit, and the credit provider's responsible too.

Top tip – pay the deposit by credit card and you're covered for the whole cost of an item or service

The law's clear on this – you get the protection for the whole cost of an item or service, even if you only pay for a part of it on credit. The only condition is that what you're buying must cost more than £100 and less than £30,000 in total. As long as it does, you'll be covered for the full amount, even if you only pay 1p of it on your credit card.

Yep!  You guys are right, and the cc woman, nice though she seemed (and probably is, this thing is endemic, isn't it) is wrong.  Right, I've had lunch, I'm a bit rested, I'm off out for a walk before the kids throng the roads round here.  Thank you, lovely ones :)

I just phoned my standard cc provider - they added £2k to my available balance, so that's now £5,450 - I mean, it used to be £10k 🤣 but that was before the financial crash 😮  I'll phone the other one this afternoon, just to make sure.  Might be tricky, as I haven't used it for very much (just fancy teatowels from the British Museum 🤣 )
Well, I got my walk in, but that was about it ... I find it really hard to focus with the dog barking :(  I can't even finish off the genealogy mini-project I'm doing.  Folding laundry, and I suppose packing for tomorrow, making sure my bathroom's okay for my sister.  Bleurgh.

Oooh, this is very exciting! Good luck!!

I don't know if this is suitable, but we've bought day insurance policies before for test driving cars. It covers 24 hours, and let's you get it home and sort out insurance. We've used Day Insure, and the RAC do one we've used as well.

Got it, thank you - love "wuzzup", by the way, that's brilliant 🤣

Thanks Cheery - they covered it on the day, they had some kind of temporary plate they stuck onto the car - as I write that down, I'm wondering if that was quite the legal way to do it, but in the end, I confess, I didn't actually drive - the dealership was crammed with positive comments online, but also the actual site was crammed with cars, I've never driven a hybrid, and I really didn't want to start there, plus pulling out onto a bypass.  Ye Olde Flash Harry contradicting me about what *I* wanted at every turn meant I had no space to ask about the car.  We were there about 15 minutes, and I was really disappointed not to be able to buy a car, but it would have been insane.

Planning a local Toyota dealership visit for Saturday delayed, as I'm very, very tired and have a driving lesson on Monday, the last one of my set of 20.  I'll be doing a lot more research about what dealership and brand dealerships are - including talking to my brother, though they have Coroner's Inquest issues right now, so it will be next week.

Just a thought KC  - I hired a car before I bought one, the dealership had a car hire dept and I hired one.   For them it was a disaster, I drove the car for a weekend work trip and hated it but I think a quick test drive I might have liked it!

I also hired an automatic before I bought one.  I didn't hire the model but I wanted to know if I would like to drive an automatic (I did).

I know it can be a pricey way "to try" but on these two times it really helped me.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Thanks Watty!  I wouldn't be at all averse to doing that - I think its a worthwhile expense, honestly.  I know I like automatics - my refresher lessons have been in an all EV automatic - but that was brand spanking new, and the ones I'm looking at are minimum 8 years old - even the way of changing between drive/park/reverse is different.  The Toyota dealer I found last night, before my fatigue kicked in, does a 24 hour test drive on new cars ... I *might* try for that, not sure yet, I haven't been able to do much today.

  • Thats a great idea Watty hiring the car beforehand.
Glad MSE and us came in to help on the cc stuff ;)  I dont like having a cc - just to build credit and the sect 75 protection.
    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.
