Heavy drizzle right now, as forecast, so its inside work at the moment. 6th December today! Christmas is creeping up ... better get going.
Ditto with the drizzle:(. The sun put in a fleeting appearance yesterday:j. At least I think it was the sun but it's been a case of 'long time no see' so I may have mistaken what it was:rotfl:
I was surprised to read recently that you are still using the green bin. Our local council ceases collection of the green bins during the winter months. We don't pay for the service ourselves (it's extra to the free normal refuse/recycling bin collections) as we've a very big garden and lots of places for composting or bonfires. Anything really nasty DH takes to the tip. They've a special facility for garden waste there. He can stand 2 or 3 big plastic dustbins (the black ones from pre-wheelybin days) upright in the back of his car so it makes transporting thorny branches etc much easier than using plastic bags which, although supposedly designed for garden waste, puncture too easily:(0 -
Hello Finally Solvent, welcome
yes, I use my neighbour's green bin, which he stores at the front of my property - they collect all year round, so the mahoosive laurel "bushes" that I have are just right for using that up. They can't be burned, there's too much cyanide in them. Plus, environmentally, I want to burn as little as possible - but nor do I want to pay for my own green bin, its quite a bit of money.
Was it the collecting all year round that surprised you, or something else?2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
I do find it interesting that different councils seem to use bins for totally different purposes. It must confuse people who move house to another area. Our green bin is used for paper & cardboard. Food, garden waste & small cut wood goes in the brown bin. Blue for bottles & grey for all the rest. The bin collection works on a 6 week rotation, but fortunately they send me an email every week to tell me which bin to put out for the next days collection. I'm sure some of my neighbours wait until I put mine out to see which ones it should be! Luckily they are all free. They send out a leaflet every year that says how much cheaper it was to deal with the other bins than it is for the grey bin.
I was at a friend's family do back in 2006 & they were complaining about having all these bins & they weren't going to bother sorting their rubbish as why should they. Actually it was more why should they do the councils job for them. So I had to explain how much cheaper it was getting rid of some things than others & I hoped they didn't mind their rates going up. People's ignorance can still leave me gobsmacked, don't they ever read stuff that comes through the door with their rates bill?
Sorry rant over!0 -

Yes, I understand totally about the environmental issues that burning can throw up:eek:. I learn something new every time I visit my favourite diaries on MSE and I've just found out from you about the dangers of burning laurel in particular:T. We don't have any laurel growing here though.
I was just surprised that your local council collects the green bins all year round when ours is just a part-year service, that's the only reason I mentioned it:).0 -

We live almost on the border of two different local authorities. We just have 2 bins here collected for free (black for general landfill waste and a light grey bin for recyclables). They are collected on a 2-week rota (one or other bin each week IYSWIM). When our friends in the adjoining LA area are on holiday and we drop in to check things are OK, feed and exercise the pets, water the plants and maybe mow the lawns we often need to put their bins out. It's really confusing, they are totally different colours to ours, the collection frequency is different and apart from bins the LA has provided big plastic boxes specifically for tins and newspapers which they don't want putting in with the other recyclables in the big bin.
One of our neighbours (a very opiniated chap who thinks he's always right on everything:() occasionally puts the wrong bin out and that makes DH doubt our memory and thinks he has put the wrong one of ours out:rotfl:0 -

Sorry rant over!but I don't moan about it, I promise - I only moan about the price of the green bin because I've read the council's justification on the website and I don't agree with it

Back when recycling started, the only way to do it was to take it to communal bins2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
My first ta-da list, 2/50 done:
- phoned bruv, we spoke for about an hour.
- all my luggage is dealt with - the day rucksack is in the wm as we speak.
- rainy day, soil is very wet, so I worked on the leylandii, cutting back the tops - its right by the hardstanding at the front, so no soil was disturbed.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Another small one from the big list: I took the donated items to the charity shop yesterday, all quite bulky so it was a good job done.
3/50
Increased the birthday card stash yesterday: 6 @99p each, *really* nice :j
I've also been preparing for the Christmas cards and Christmas decorations, nothing much, but it all counts and they're on the big list!
Today, start on the Christmas cards properly, plus a few easy wins from the big list: pay cc, look for u3a login details in my 2019 accounts papers. A bit of stuff in the garden, since its so lovely here today currentlyPlus a couple of emails to friends and family to reply to.

Well done on the decluttering KC!!! It feels so good to get rid of bulky bits!
Must have been that kind of day yesterday - we at long last decluttered our small ironing board bought from Wilko 13 years ago! Finally bit the bullet and invested in a solid B@rb@nti@ which I absolutely love! That was actually earlier this year but OH kept 'forgetting' to take the old one to town for the charity shop!
I may have used a bit of a chore list & coersive tactics to get him to help me part with it! We may have come home with a bag of frozen gyoza as a reward.:rotfl:4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! Hi RT
Good for you with the ironing boardI'm still wondering about getting rid of mine full stop - I haven't used it for about 4 years, and if I *did* need to iron something, my desk could be the base plus whatever I needed to do it safely. Can't quite decide
I've just done 4/50 from the big list - trying to find the U3A login details, I went through all my accounts paperwork for this year, and I've previously been through the vague "to-do" pile of paper on the desk. I must have chucked it out, because I definitely remember seeing it, and I *need* the login to find groups details, but there's no way to get the info online, so I've emailed the poor longsuffering membership secretary, with apologies. It all took a ridiculous amount of time, but it needed doing.
Lunch now :j2023: the year I get to buy a car0
