Wow ... the purchase went smoothly, although it only happened on the Thursday 22nd at 5pm.
The sale ... on Friday 23rd, the solicitor on that end blackmailed us, basically. We called her bluff and lost. All the effort that went into buying the freehold so that they wouldn't be worried about leasehold problems was for nothing, they wanted an indemnity (ie money off the price) of 6 years ground rent in case there was a problem. We said no. They said that the sale was off. So at 11.25 on Friday 23rd, we agreed to sell. We moved out 3 hours later. Our buyer was pretending she didn't know anything about it, and also pretending she'd reimburse us, and both those things have turned out to be untrue.
I was still very welcoming to her though, as I can't do middle ground stuff - I'm either nice, or notand if I'm not, I'm *really* not nice. And she loves the house itself, its obvious, she was literally jumping up and down for joy. Our cleaning work has enthralled her :rotfl: and she texted her thanks for the cleanliness and for my welcome the next day. Good Karma.
The house my brother's gone to is a beautiful little terrace (erm, bigger than my house!) very sturdy, trees growing on the grass verge, but utterly, utterly filthy - we kind of knew it would be, 5 adults living there
We were so busy cleaning, from Friday evening onwards, that when I left to come home yesterday, we were still using Tosco Surface Cleaning Spray to get washed in the bathroom...
:eek::rotfl: I rest my case.
But it will be beautiful, I have absolutely no doubt, and I'm so pleased he's moved somewhere so nice.
Thank you all again for the good wishes :kisses3: Now to check out this spy stuff2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

I'm so happy for all of you that things worked out well (sort of) in the end and your brother now has a lovely new home. What a time you and your siblings have had with house sales recently:eek:
Well done for all your help with the cleaning. Lovely to hear that your health has improved so much that you were able to be an equal (or more than equal) partner in the donkey work. How nice to see siblings helping each other out like that:A
I hope you'll manage to find a bit of time for some much-deserved r&r now you're finally home. Take care x0 -
Thanks CBC
To be honest, not much rest here, oops. Today:
- supermarket delivery between 2 and 3.
- two loads of washing are just finishing.
- might put a third on, just an anorak that I can put on a hangar.
- finish unpacking, put the case away.
- open the post, that really, really needs doing
- giffgaff sim must be followed up, no point throwing money away on Three.
- haul out the Christmas cards and stare blankly at them :rotfl:2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

That could be me:o.
I've been having a real decluttering blitz recently and discovered dozens of Christmas cards, oddments from packs mainly but really nice ones all the same. I used to be (still am when funds allow) a sucker for buying packs of charity cards when my favourite 2 animal charities sent me their Christmas catalogue. I send so few cards and try to tailor each to the recipient as they are mainly family who really go to town with theirs:eek:. I just use the charity ones for a handful of former work colleagues and acquaintances. Goodness knows what I thought I was going to do with 12 of the same x 2 most years. After staring blankly at all that stash I'm still going to have to go out and buy individual ones for family members again this year:(. I think a trip to a few charity shops beckons for the leftovers.0 -
I have quite a system going on Christmas cards. I buy packs in the sales - I used to misjudge the sizes (too small) but I don't do that any more. First year of opening, cards go to closest family. Next year, everyone else
I make a note of what has gone to who, so I don't repeat, and I don't send the same one two years running, or to two siblings, that sort of thing. I don't really send that many, so its not as onerous as it sounds, honestly. And nowadays, there are fewer to be sent, because of all the weird family stuff that happened.
So, I've had an early lunch, the 3rd wash has cycled through the machine, started unpacking the case, and I've found out that Ikea have a kitchen planner. If this is my forever home, I'm not living the rest of my life with that kitchen!
Got to see to the post first, though, supermarket delivery soon.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Hello!!
I haven't been on MSE for ages, but as the winter draws in, it always feels cosy to visit my MFW friends.
I hope you are well KC, just been having a look at your diary, and saw that you sold your mum's house. Lots of mixed emotions I should imagine, but also a feeling that you can move forward at this point. My parents house was rented and they had lived there all their married life, since 1955. Prior to that, it was rented by my mum's great aunt and great uncle, so it had been in the family for over 80 years. When my dad died and my mum had to go into a home because of her Alzheimers, it fell to me to wrap up 80 years of family history and give up the tenancy. After I had the house clearers in it was strange to see all the empty rooms - can't believe it was 14 years ago, time goes so fast.
I have exactly the same Christmas card system as you. The newest, 'nicest' cards go to close family and friends, then the older cards go to everyone else, and I make a note of what card has been sent, so I don't duplicate it next year. It has all become a bit fragmented, and I'm left with a lot of odds and sods of packs of cards, so this year I will make sure all the oddments are used.
Hopefully I'll be a more regular visitor this winter, and intend making a tour of diaries to see how everyone is.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Hello :kisses3: How lovely to see you! I've been thinking of you for ages, wondering how you are
Yes, there was a lot going on - for instance, one of the family folders of paper I hadn't picked up was finally found: original-looking prints of our borough of origin within Liverpool, dating from the early 19th century, and newspaper clippings from 1935. I suspect our mum bought the prints after she moved to the house we've just sold, they're the sort of thing you'd find there. Fascinating. I have them now, to scan them, and then share the four out between us.
And your parents' house! Oh my word. That's ever such a long time for the house to have been in the family, and you did it all on your own - I had my brother and sister, not the same thing at all. My nan lived in her council house for 50 years, from when it was a new build, but even that was renovated by the council 5 years before she left, so it had already been stripped out of all the little family things.
It'll be lovely to see you on here a bit more2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Glad the house sale has gone through KC, can't believe the shennanigans at the end. People do behave badly in relation to house buying and selling don't they?? Glad everything has gone through now though. I admire you being able to be nice!
Also admire your Christmas card organisation! My system seems to be
1. buy cards
2. forget where I've put them
3. write some, but forget to post them
4. receive cards, and in a panic send cards back to the people who sent them
5. feel guilty about not sending them to everyone else
Oh dear! :rotfl:0 -
Hi cheery daff we have a similar system to you. I managed to find about 6 packets of cards in the year but can I remember where they are? Nope not got a clue

So pleased everything is now sorted out house wise.
