Receipt for a cheque deposit

Does your bank (self service machine or counter) give you a receipt after depositing a cheque (standard UK issued in GBP)?

Yes/no answer for you bank for following please:
Staff automatically give a receipt
Staff give a receipt if requested
Machines automatically give a receipt
Machines give a receipt if requested

I am currently using Lloyds (staff not machine). At my branch, these are now handled by the "modern" customer service desks (replaced the counter/tellers at the back which are now just meeting rooms) and they do not issue a receipt. Upon requesting I was given a strange stare and a firm "we don't give receipts" but this may be specific to my branch as the staff are not particularly friendly (I have previously been advised "to just use the machine" even when no customers where in queue, as the staff was annoyed I interrupted whatever she was doing on her phone)

I always now use the machines for depositing cheques in lloyds.
These give a receipt in the form of a mini-photocopy of the cheque image and a listing of each cheque's amount plus time/date/place etc.

When I used the lloyds cashier in the past:
I used my pre-printed paying in book and the cashier stamped the counterfoil which I filled in with the deposit's details so yes that was a receipt of form.

I think if you picked up a blank universal deposit slip in branch which did not have receipt counterfoil then you did not get a receipt.
Also in the back of my cheque book there were some pre-printed deposit slips without any receipt counterfoil so you would not get one using these either.
  • You can always ask for a receipt at Lloyds.
If you did ask and they refused I would complain.

After having a cash deposit go wrong years ago I have only used machine to take out cash. Have you had any issues? Is the receipt automatically printed or do you have to select it manually similar to when withdrawing cash?

When dealing with a cashier, I just hand over my cheque. I don't use a paying in book or deposit slip, it has never been requested.

I can't remember whether there is a specific point on the touch screen where it asks whether you want a receipt or not.....sorry.
I've never had any issues with the machines myself.
You put the cheques in (the way round you are told!)
Up to 5 can be input at one time (more than that you need to do them in batches of 5) they all go in together not one after the other.
It OCR's the cheques and tells you for each one its value and you are invited to accept or modify.
This is done with an image of the cheque in front of you on the screen so you can see.
For those so badly written it cannot OCR you are told to enter up the figure manually.

Then I think it totals up all the cheques and invites you to accept the sum.
    Then it prints the receipt.
I've just looked for you on a receipt I have...
Prints last 4 digits of card used as the destination account.
Location and sort code of branch you are using.
    Date, time, ATM ref code.
Listing of each cheque and its value plus the total accepted.
Date the cleared funds will be available.
Then an image of each cheque as scanned is printed on the receipt.

I'm also with Lloyds and at the counter they don't automatically give one, but have always asked me if I would like one. Usually I use the machine now, though, since it clears in the same time and saves waiting in the queue.

The instant cheque deposit machines such as Lloyds use will automatically print the receipt. Remember this is not the same as the deposit function on older ATMs. I've used it a few times over the past few years and never had an issue.

The HSBC cheque pay-in machines include a scan of cheque on their receipts (and have done since they have been installed years ago). At the counter, the staff stamp the pay-in counterfoil.

Of course, in a few months, I expect paying in cheques at home via apps will become commonplace.

From 30 October 2017, banks will begin to introduce a new way to pay cheques in called the Image Clearing System.
This system will allow banks to clear a digital image of a cheque rather than the original paper cheque. The Image
Clearing System will be introduced gradually and will operate alongside the existing paper cheque clearing system.

    Yeah, seems likely lol

Wow, which charm school did she go to? Sadly some people working in customer-facing roles lack the necessary personal skills, never mind the fact that they are there to work, rather than to play with their phones!

Sounds like you are getting pretty ropey customer service from your local Lloyds branch. I'd complain to the manager about the attitude of his/her staff to start off with and then I'd look for an alternative bank.

Santander provide receipts both at the counter and via paying in machines.

I bank with HSBC and very unimpressed with how they've handled Cheque Imaging so far.
It's not available in all branches yet so I think expecting it in App within a few months is wishful thinking, at least for HSBC anyway.

Pay in over the counter at TSB (Scotland) and always get a receipt without asking (may be offered choice but not sure - certainly don't need to ask). If I pay in myself it also includes balance.
