When I pay in cheques by post (Freepost so no stamp) to my Britannia account I get a printed receipt by return of post.

Co-op don't do printed receipts for postal deposits from Co-op or Smile accounts, just Britannia ones.

    Barclays:

Over the counter I think you get a receipt as standard in almost all circumstances. Not sure what happens if you use a paying in slip. If you were paying a bill by cheque you'd get the cashier stamp on the bill in lieu of a receipt but they can also provide one on request.

The automated machines will always give a receipt for cheque deposit. You can choose whether to have the cheque image appear on the receipt or just figures.

Wow, which charm school did she go to? Sadly some people working in customer-facing roles lack the necessary personal skills, never mind the fact that they are there to work, rather than to play with their phones!

Sounds like you are getting pretty ropey customer service from your local Lloyds branch. I'd complain to the manager about the attitude of his/her staff to start off with and then I'd look for an alternative bank.

Santander provide receipts both at the counter and via paying in machines.

My Lloyds branch is the only bank in my town that gives bad service. Not worse than others, outright bad service. I visit it only because it is preferable (for continuity of historical records) I deposit certain cheques into my account there. Interestingly, it always has the shortest queues- probably related to the welcoming customer service.

I would rather not deal with the manager (branch or the 'personal account manager' or whatever the salesperson is called). It is just not worth it.

I will try the machines at Lloyds next time. Replies were encouraging and useful, thanks all.

I have used Barclays a few times before but only for non-UK cheques, IOUs. It has always been handled sitting down at a staff's desk not at the counter and I have always been given a receipt without asking and they have even offered to scan it as well so it appears in my online documents. Once there was an issue with a foreign cheque (not Barclays fault) and their communication and resolution was very impressive, basically Private Banking level even though I'm just a regular customer with them.

if you use a paying in slip (or book) then the counterfoil will be initialled and stamped, that's your receipt.
