Book early enough and you can get flights for less than the petrol cost of driving a couple of counties and back.

Because you dont have to rent a property to have a holiday in the UK. You can holiday in the UK for as little as £10 a night and travel as near or as far as you want from home

What do you get for a tenner? How many people for that price per night - a whole family of just per person?

I know renting in the UK's expensive which is why I'm always puzzled when people can afford to holiday here but not abroad.
Not that we particularly holiday in the U.K, but if we did. We don't pay petrol costs in the U.K ('perk' of DH's job), we could self cater and take the food from our cupboards with us. No passports to buy/re-new. Am far more likely to know where to go to get a 2for1 outing or a dining out deal. These are just things I can think of off the top of my head. :)

plenty of camp sites charge £10 a night for a family
  • In my experience though, the weather usually means that if you have kids it costs more in the UK as often you have to find indoor activities.

£1k for a week's rent in Cornwall strikes me as incredibly expensive compared to what you might pay in many Continental countries - was it absolutely amazing?

sister in law pays £2500 for a 4 bed house overlooking beach in newquay area and thinks its cheap:eek:........but they haven't a clue about money

We have rented places in Devon/Cornwall and abroad. All things considered, I reckon the UK can compete.

This place sounds expensive at around £2k for week but it slept 14 so the price compares well with similar offerings abroad.

I enjoy reading on a sun lounger as much as the next person

That is something I don't do. My ex-wife used to love it. I used to leave her to it and hire a 4x4 and go off exploring without her. The current Mrs G insists we hire or borrow a 4x4. We prefer beaches to pools and the fewer people on them the better.

Perhaps not everybody's idea of a good holiday but hiring a boat or a car and getting away from the crowds isn't that expensive. Probably less than tickets to a water/theme park or similar attraction.

^^^^ A nightmare situation for my sister. You don't get aquatic flora and fauna brushing against you during your average NT property tour.

But ferry fares are inexpensive and driving to much of the Continent may well be nearer than driving to Cornwall.

We don’t holiday abroad, simple. :) last couple of years we’ve gone to Cornwall for a week in the summer and rented a self catering holiday cottage. Husband and I actually find holidaying in this country simpler and more enjoyable than going abroad, although obviously it’s not for everyone. I think it cost us just under £1k last summer excluding spending money, but we didn’t spend much. Our son is 2 but we are limited to school holidays as husband is a teacher but if you can go outside these it would cost less. No way we could afford £4K for a summer holiday. We are the exception in our circle, I don’t know many families with young kids that can afford holidays at all.

We've paid less than £1k for 2 adults for a 2 week holiday on the Greek mainland (June) including transfers and flights.
The accommodation is pretty basic cooking-wise but always clean, has a terrace, overlooks the pool and has a sea view.
We push the boat out food-wise as that is a big part of our holiday enjoyment.
